Tecno Reveals a Smartphone Concept With an Almost Borderless Display

Tecno has shown a new concept smartphone built around a display that appears to stretch across nearly the entire front of the device.

The company describes the prototype as having a 0mm display bezel, although a very thin outer frame is still visible around the panel. Even with that small border, the design removes most of the unused space normally found around a smartphone screen.

The result is a device with a much larger visible display area without requiring a wider or taller body. Photos, videos, games, and other content can fill almost the entire front surface, leaving only a small punch hole for the selfie camera.

Tecno plans to present the concept publicly at the IFA 2026 trade show in Berlin this September. The event should provide the first opportunity to examine how the prototype feels in the hand and whether the nearly borderless design works as well outside promotional images.

Tecno redesigned the display and internal structure

Creating a phone with extremely thin borders requires more than placing a larger screen inside the same frame. Conventional smartphone displays need space around their edges for cables, seals, display drivers, and structural support.

Tecno says it reduced this unused area through three main engineering changes. These include custom display packaging, more compact internal component placement, and a redesigned frame.

The company moved important display electronics beneath the active pixel area rather than keeping them around the outer edge. This allowed the visible portion of the screen to extend closer to all four sides.

Earlier attempts at borderless phones often relied on compromises. Some models placed cameras and sensors inside a large lower section, while others used strongly curved displays to make the side borders appear smaller.

Tecno’s concept uses a more even layout. The screen reaches close to every edge without a large chin at the bottom or heavily curved sides.

Accidental touches remain an important challenge

A screen that extends to the edge of the phone can create usability problems. Your fingers and palm may touch the display while you are simply holding the device, causing unwanted actions.

Tecno says it has developed touch detection software designed to identify and reject accidental palm input. The company is also working on an adaptive interface that can adjust content and controls for the unusual screen shape.

The prototype reportedly uses screen based audio technology as well. This could reduce the need for a traditional speaker opening near the top edge and help preserve the clean front design.

However, the company has not yet explained how the phone handles other practical concerns such as drop protection, screen replacement costs, case compatibility, and long term durability. A phone with almost no border may leave the display more exposed during an impact.

The concept may influence future Tecno phones

Tecno has presented several unusual hardware ideas in recent years, including thin phone prototypes, folding designs, modular accessories, and motorised camera systems.

Some concept devices remain demonstrations, while others introduce technology that later appears in commercial products. Tecno says the systems developed for this borderless prototype will support future phones, even if this exact model never reaches stores.

That includes its touch rejection system, display packaging method, screen audio, internal component layout, and interface software.

The company has not announced a price, release date, or final product name. It also has not confirmed whether the concept will enter mass production.

For now, the device serves as a demonstration of how smartphone makers may continue reducing screen borders. The design offers more viewing space in a familiar body, but its success will depend on comfort, durability, repairability, and reliable touch control.

The public appearance at IFA 2026 should reveal whether Tecno has created a practical borderless phone or an impressive engineering concept that still needs further development.
