Stardew Valley Players are Getting a Free Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade

Stardew Valley players who already own the game on the original Nintendo Switch can now upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition at no extra cost, following a surprise release on the Nintendo eShop.

The upgrade went live on December 25, 2025, and immediately sparked attention across the Nintendo community due to its expanded multiplayer features and Switch 2–specific improvements.

What the Switch 2 edition adds

The new edition introduces several enhancements designed to take advantage of Nintendo’s next-generation hardware.

Players gain access to Joy-Con 2 mouse-style controls, which improve menu navigation, inventory management, and farming precision. Local split-screen co-op now supports up to four players, doubling the previous limit on the original Switch.

Online multiplayer also sees a major boost, with support for up to eight players in shared farms. Nintendo’s GameShare functionality allows friends to join multiplayer sessions using a single purchased copy of the game.

Free upgrade for existing owners

Anyone who already purchased Stardew Valley on Nintendo Switch can download the Switch 2 version without paying again. New players can still buy the game at its standard price, which remains unchanged on the eShop.

Nintendo has begun rolling out the upgrade in the United States first, with other regions expected to follow shortly.

Developer acknowledges early issues

Following the launch, some players reported connectivity and online co-op problems. Eric Barone, also known as ConcernedApe, addressed the reports publicly, apologized to players, and confirmed that fixes are already in progress.

Early patches aim to stabilize online multiplayer and improve overall performance on the new hardware.

Why it matters

Free next-generation upgrades remain rare, especially for long-running indie titles. By offering the Switch 2 edition at no cost, Stardew Valley sets a consumer-friendly precedent while extending the life of one of Nintendo’s most popular games.

With expanded co-op and continued developer support, the Switch 2 version positions Stardew Valley as a showcase title for Nintendo’s new console ecosystem.
