Sony may be preparing to bring Killzone back after more than a decade, with a new report claiming that Guerrilla Games is involved in an early stage remake or remaster being developed alongside an external studio.
The project has not been officially announced, so the details remain unconfirmed. However, the report suggests Sony has approved the revival and that it could arrive before Horizon 3.
That would mark a notable change in direction for Guerrilla, which has spent recent years focused heavily on the Horizon franchise.
| Detail | Reported information |
|---|---|

| Development status | Very early production |
| Studios involved | Guerrilla Games and an external team |
| Official announcement | No |

| Shadow Fall release year | 2013 |
Killzone Could Return After More Than a Decade
Killzone has been largely inactive since Killzone Shadow Fall launched alongside the PlayStation 4 in 2013.
The new report claims Sony has now approved a return for the franchise, although it is still unclear whether the project is a full remake or a more conventional remaster.
Guerrilla is reportedly collaborating with another studio rather than handling the entire project internally.
That structure could allow Guerrilla to remain involved creatively while continuing work on its other projects.
Because development is said to be at a very early stage, there is no reported release window.
The Project May Come Before Horizon 3
One of the more surprising claims is that the Killzone project could be released before Horizon 3.
Guerrilla and Sony have placed considerable emphasis on Horizon since the launch of Horizon Zero Dawn, expanding the property through sequels, multiplayer projects, and adaptations.
According to the report, the original plan was for work on Killzone to begin after Horizon Hunters Gathering.
Changes to that project may have affected the development schedule, but Killzone is still reportedly positioned ahead of the next numbered Horizon game.
There has been no official confirmation from Sony or Guerrilla about this release order.
Guerrilla Previously Suggested It Had Moved On
A Killzone return would also represent a change from Guerrilla's previous public position.
Studio art director Roy Postma said in 2024 that the team had chosen to move away from Killzone when developing Horizon.

The studio wanted a different creative direction, and Horizon was intentionally designed around themes and characters that were very different from Killzone.
That did not necessarily rule out Sony revisiting the franchise with another development team, but it suggested that Guerrilla itself was no longer focused on returning to the series.
The new report points to a possible reversal, at least to some degree.
Recent Activity Had Already Brought Killzone Back Into View
Killzone had shown small signs of activity before this report.
The franchise appeared through a crossover with Helldivers 2, giving Sony an opportunity to bring Killzone imagery and content back in front of a modern PlayStation audience.
At the time, that collaboration could easily have been treated as a nostalgia focused appearance rather than evidence of a larger revival.
If the latest development report is accurate, the crossover may now look more significant.
Still, there is no confirmed connection between that event and the reported remake or remaster.
A Remake and Remaster Would Be Very Different Projects
The distinction between a remake and a remaster matters because the original report does not appear to establish which approach Sony has chosen.
A remaster would typically retain much of the original game's structure while improving resolution, frame rate, assets, controls, and compatibility with current hardware.
A remake could involve substantially greater changes to environments, gameplay systems, animation, artificial intelligence, and presentation.
It is also unclear which Killzone game would be selected.
The franchise includes several mainline titles and handheld releases, and the report does not identify a specific entry.
Until Sony or Guerrilla provides official details, the project should therefore be treated as an early reported revival rather than a confirmed new Killzone release.
