Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Turns Sophia Into an Action Hero While Keeping Puzzles at the Center

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is changing the formula of Asobo Studio’s series by putting more focus on action combat, but the game’s puzzles may end up being its strongest feature. The new prequel stars Sophia, a character introduced in A Plague Tale: Requiem, and takes the series to ancient Greece more than a decade before the events of the previous game.

The game launches on August 27, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. It will also be available through Xbox Game Pass on day one.

Resonance follows Sophia as she travels to a mysterious island near Crete with her friend Leni. She is being hunted by her former plunderer gang after taking an object connected to a hidden treasure. Her journey also leads her toward the ancient history of the Prima Macula, the supernatural force at the center of the earlier games.

The new story introduces a dual timeline structure. As Sophia explores the island, she experiences visions that let players control Theseus, the legendary Greek hero associated with the Minotaur myth. Theseus has a different combat style, different enemies, and a more mythological tone than Sophia’s story.

Sophia Brings Full Action Combat to A Plague Tale

Earlier A Plague Tale games were heavily built around stealth and survival. Resonance keeps some stealth elements, but Sophia is far more capable in direct combat than Amicia or Hugo.

She uses a sword for regular attacks and a dagger for stronger Critical Strikes. These attacks are most effective after an enemy has been stunned or left vulnerable. Each enemy has both a health bar and a stun gauge, making parries, kicks, dodges, and timing important during fights.

Sophia can parry standard attacks, counter yellow attacks with a strong parry, and dodge red attacks. She also has a grappling hook that can pull enemies into hazards or throw them off ledges.

Combat ToolMain Use
SwordBasic melee attacks and combos
DaggerStrong Critical Strikes
ParryBuilds enemy stun
KickBreaks defensive stances
Grappling hookPulls enemies into hazards or off ledges
ThrowablesDamage or stun nearby enemies

Puzzles Could Be the Game’s Biggest Strength

The combat is more active and enjoyable than before, but the puzzle design appears to be where Resonance stands out. Sophia carries a stolen Minoan sphere that is used to manipulate light and solve environmental puzzles across the island.

The island was designed as a maze by Daedalus, and its ruins are filled with light based mechanisms. These puzzles require players to study the environment, move objects, unlock paths, and use the sphere carefully.

Sophia also keeps a crew notebook to help track information and navigate the island. The puzzle design has more of an adventure game feel, with some similarities to Tomb Raider style exploration.

The Series Still Keeps Its Tension and Horror

Despite the shift toward action, Resonance does not completely abandon the tension that made the series popular. One section sees Sophia trapped beneath the island while being hunted by a creature that cannot be defeated through normal combat.

Light is the only thing that can stop the creature, forcing Sophia to move carefully through dangerous areas while managing limited safety zones. This type of pursuit sequence feels closer to the survival horror roots of A Plague Tale.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy appears to be a major change for the franchise, but it still keeps several familiar ideas. The game has more combat, a new protagonist, and a stronger mythological setting, yet it continues to rely on danger, exploration, light based mechanics, and narrative mystery.

The combat may not be as deep as the best action games, but the combination of puzzles, atmosphere, and Sophia’s new abilities could make Resonance one of Asobo Studio’s most ambitious projects yet.
