Valve has released a new Proton Experimental update with fixes for several Windows games running through Proton on Linux and Steam Deck.
The latest update addresses a crash affecting Terminator: Dark Fate Defiance, along with problems in Plan B: Terraform, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, Locoland and several other games.
If you already have Proton Experimental installed, the new version should download automatically through Steam. Players who do not have it installed can find Proton Experimental through Steam and add it to their system.
Terminator Dark Fate Defiance Crash Is Now Fixed
One of the most notable changes involves Terminator: Dark Fate Defiance. The game could previously crash when running through Proton Experimental, but the latest update is designed to resolve that problem.
Plan B: Terraform also receives an important fix. A memory leak affecting the game has been corrected, which should improve stability during longer sessions.
Several smaller compatibility issues have also been addressed.
| Game or application | Fix included |
|---|---|
| Terminator: Dark Fate Defiance | Fixed a crash |
| Plan B: Terraform | Fixed a memory leak |
| Sword of the Stars II: Enhanced Edition | Fixed a rendering issue |
| STEEL GULLET Demo | Fixed camera rotation stutter |
| Blue Effect VR | Fixed startup problems on some CPUs |
| Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris | Fixed controller stutter |
| Locoland | Video playback works correctly again |
Sword of the Stars II: Enhanced Edition had a rendering problem that should no longer occur after installing the latest experimental version.
The STEEL GULLET Demo also receives a fix for camera rotation stutter that had appeared as a regression in the experimental branch.
Blue Effect VR had another compatibility problem where the game could fail to start on certain processors. The latest update addresses that issue as well.
Proton 11 Regressions Receive Additional Fixes
The update also corrects two problems introduced through Proton 11 changes.
Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris had been affected by controller stuttering. That regression has now been fixed, which should make controller input smoother again.
Locoland receives a separate correction for video playback. Videos that had stopped working properly under Proton should now play as expected.
These fixes show why Proton Experimental remains useful for Steam Deck and Linux players who want access to the newest compatibility improvements before they move into more stable Proton releases.
Experimental builds can introduce regressions because they contain newer changes, but they also receive fixes more quickly when specific games stop working correctly.

For Steam Deck owners, switching to Proton Experimental can sometimes solve crashes, controller problems or graphical issues without requiring changes to the game itself.
You can select Proton Experimental for an individual game through its compatibility settings if the default Proton version is causing problems.
The latest release is primarily focused on game specific bug fixes rather than adding major new Proton features. Terminator: Dark Fate Defiance receives the most noticeable correction with its crash fix, while Plan B: Terraform benefits from the removal of its memory leak.
Players affected by any of the listed issues should therefore have a reason to test the newest Proton Experimental build. As always with experimental software, other unexpected problems can still appear, but this update removes several known compatibility issues across a varied group of games.
