OpenRGB has reached version 1.0 after almost three years of development, giving the open source RGB control utility a major update with wider hardware support, a revised profile system and several technical changes under the hood.
The software is designed to control lighting across components from different manufacturers through one application. That can reduce the need to install separate utilities for motherboards, memory, graphics cards, keyboards, mice and other RGB equipped hardware.
Version 1.0 also improves how OpenRGB can operate in the background, while moving the application to Qt6 and updating the software interfaces used by plugins and external tools.

OpenRGB can replace multiple vendor utilities
One of OpenRGB's main goals is to simplify RGB lighting management.
A typical PC can include components from several manufacturers, each with its own control software. OpenRGB tries to handle many of these devices from one interface instead.
The application supports lighting on motherboards, memory modules, graphics cards and peripherals, along with a growing list of other compatible devices.
Version 1.0 expands that device support further. Much of the additional compatibility was introduced gradually through earlier release candidate builds before being included in the final 1.0 release.
This means the new version includes updates covering hardware such as monitors, laptops, mice, keyboards and PC components from multiple brands.
Profile system has been reworked
OpenRGB 1.0 includes a redesigned profile system.
Profiles allow you to save lighting configurations and restore them later, which is useful if you regularly switch between different effects or color setups.
The new release also makes it easier for OpenRGB to operate as a background service.

That means the full application does not necessarily need to remain open all the time just to maintain hardware access and lighting settings.
This should make the software less intrusive during normal desktop use.
OpenRGB moves from Qt5 to Qt6
Another major change is the move from Qt5 to Qt6.
Qt is the software framework used to build the OpenRGB interface, and the transition brings the project onto a newer foundation for future development.
Windows users will also see a change in how OpenRGB accesses certain hardware.
Version 1.0 introduces PawnIO support for low level access required by some devices, including RGB memory modules and older motherboards.
You can either run OpenRGB with administrator privileges or install the background service that provides the required hardware access.
Linux installations may have their own additional requirements. Debian and Fedora package users may need the project's hidapi hotplug dependency depending on their setup.
Plugin compatibility may need attention
OpenRGB 1.0 updates the SDK to version 6 and the Plugin API to version 5.
That means older plugins may not work correctly with the new release until compatible versions are available.
The developers said updated plugin builds designed for OpenRGB 1.0 would follow the main release.
If you depend heavily on third party plugins, it may therefore be worth checking compatibility before upgrading an existing system.
Version 1.0 marks an important milestone
OpenRGB 0.9 arrived in July 2023, so the move to version 1.0 comes after more than three years of continued development.
The release does not completely change what the software is designed to do. Instead, it gives the project a more mature base with broader hardware support, improved background operation and updated development tools.
For people trying to avoid installing several separate RGB utilities from different hardware manufacturers, OpenRGB remains one of the more flexible alternatives available.
