Hello Games has released the Cosmos update for No Man's Sky, adding player owned space stations, new deep space exploration systems, alliances, Space Hulks, and a six week Expedition marking the game's 10th anniversary.
The update focuses heavily on activities beyond planetary surfaces, giving players more reasons to explore solar systems, scan deep space, and build a presence in orbit.
One of the biggest additions is the ability to take control of a space station and customize it.
Players can become directors of space stations
Players can now earn the right to become director of a local space station after proving themselves to the relevant authorities.
Once under player control, the station can be customized across its exterior, interior, and individual compartments.
| Cosmos feature | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Player owned stations | Become station director and customize the structure |
| System scanning | Reveal points of interest across solar systems |
| Asteroid belts | Resource rich areas to explore |
| Deep space outposts | Remote locations that may contain alien residents |
| Space Hulks | Large wrecks containing technology and cargo |
| Alliances | Cooperative groups with activity based rankings |
| Expedition 23 | Six week anniversary journey through the game's history |
| Developer commentary | Commentary included during the new Expedition |
The station system gives players another persistent structure to manage alongside planetary bases and fleets.
Deep space scanning reveals new locations
Cosmos also changes how players explore new solar systems.
After entering a system, players can scan the surrounding area to reveal points of interest in space. These may include asteroid belts containing useful resources, suitable areas for constructing bases, remote outposts, and enormous abandoned wrecks.
Some deep space outposts may still contain alien inhabitants, giving players additional places to visit without returning to a planetary surface.
The update therefore expands exploration beyond the usual sequence of flying between planets and stations.
Space Hulks introduce risky salvage missions
Among the new discoveries are Space Hulks, enormous wrecked ships drifting through deep space.
Players can leave their ships and explore these structures while spacewalking. The wrecks may contain valuable technologies and cargo, but dismantling them carries risks.
Hello Games says their age and damaged condition can make them structurally unstable. Salvage activity therefore requires more care than simply collecting resources from a normal point of interest.
The system builds on the game's existing spacewalking mechanics while giving them a larger role in exploration.
Alliances add group based competition
Cosmos also introduces Alliances, allowing players to organize into groups and coordinate activities across the galaxy.

Alliance rankings are based on member activity. The largest and most active groups can appear on leaderboards displayed at the core of space stations.
The feature adds a more formal cooperative structure for players who already explore or complete activities together.
Expedition 23 celebrates 10 years of No Man's Sky
The update includes the game's 23rd Expedition, which will run for six weeks.
This anniversary Expedition is designed around the history of No Man's Sky and takes players through elements from the game's 10 year development journey.
Developer commentary will also appear during the Expedition for the first time, adding background information about the game's evolution while players complete its objectives.
The Cosmos update is available now on PC through Steam and the Xbox app, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, Game Pass, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
