Ninja Theory Faces More Departures as Senua Cancellation Risk Grows

Ninja Theory is facing growing uncertainty after multiple employees confirmed that they have left the studio or are at risk of departing, raising fresh concerns about the future of its recently announced Senua project.

The situation follows earlier warnings that the studio could be closed after attempts to secure its future through two separate agreements failed. Consultation with employees was expected to follow, while other possible options for keeping the studio operating remained under consideration.

Several developers from different departments have now publicly confirmed departures or indicated that their positions are at risk. The affected roles span gameplay programming, performance capture, audio, technical art, character art and technical leadership.

The developments also create uncertainty around Senua, a new game announced in June with a planned 2027 release window.

Employees Say Unfinished Work Had Already Received Significant Investment

Comments from departing staff suggest substantial development work had already taken place before the recent changes.

Gameplay programmer Katrin Mair described the studio as a place where people cared deeply about both the quality of the work and one another. She said it was difficult knowing that the team would not be able to finish what it had been creating and noted that considerable care, effort and talent had already gone into the project.

Performance capture specialist Xoe Suvari also described extensive work behind the scenes. The team had completed hundreds of shooting days, processed large amounts of performance capture data and developed its own production pipelines. A dedicated performance capture stage had also been built as part of that work.

These departures matter because they affect several disciplines required to finish a large production. Losing staff across programming, art, audio and capture can make development significantly harder even if a studio technically remains open.

Senua Now Faces a More Uncertain Future

Senua was announced only a few months ago and was expected to arrive in 2027. The project would continue the studio's work with the character after the Hellblade series, although details about its structure remain limited.

There has been no official confirmation that Senua has been cancelled.

However, the combination of unsuccessful attempts to secure the studio's future and the departure of employees who were directly involved in development makes cancellation appear increasingly possible.

The employee comments are particularly significant because they refer to unfinished work rather than simply completed projects. That suggests production was active when the staffing changes occurred.

It is still possible that Ninja Theory could continue in a smaller form, find another arrangement or preserve part of the Senua project. The available information does not establish that the studio has completely closed.

What is clear is that its position has become much more difficult.

Ninja Theory built its reputation through games that placed strong emphasis on performance capture, cinematic presentation, audio design and character focused storytelling. Losing specialists in those exact areas creates a direct challenge for any future project trying to maintain the same production approach.

The immediate impact is also broader than the fate of a single game. Several experienced developers are now looking for new positions after contributing to technology, art and production systems that had already been developed for upcoming work.

For Senua, the next major question is whether enough of the original team can remain together to continue development. Until a formal decision is announced, the project technically remains alive, but the recent departures make its planned 2027 release considerably less certain.
