Larian Studios Explains Why It Left Baldur’s Gate Behind For Divinity

Larian Studios has confirmed it is officially done with Baldur’s Gate, choosing instead to return its full attention to the Divinity series. The decision comes after the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3, but according to studio leadership, continuing with Dungeons & Dragons simply no longer felt creatively rewarding.

Founder and CEO Swen Vincke explained that while Baldur’s Gate 3 was a defining achievement, the team was no longer excited about working within the D&D framework. That lack of enthusiasm ultimately led Larian to cancel plans for Baldur’s Gate 4 and any future expansions.

Why Larian Studios Walked Away From Baldur’s Gate

Larian began early exploration on a follow-up project after Baldur’s Gate 3, but those plans never moved forward. Vincke stated that excitement is a non-negotiable requirement for the studio, and without it, continuing the franchise made little sense.

While outside speculation pointed to Wizards of the Coast layoffs as a possible factor, Vincke emphasized that creative motivation played a much larger role. The studio wanted to build something it genuinely looked forward to making every day.

Dungeons & Dragons Came With Too Many Constraints

One major challenge was adapting Dungeons & Dragons 5E into a video game format. Vincke previously noted that many experimental combat and RPG systems Larian wanted to explore simply did not fit within the D&D ruleset.

Despite Baldur’s Gate 3 winning awards for its cRPG mechanics, those limitations restricted how far the team could innovate. Moving away from D&D removes those barriers and gives Larian full control over its game design.

Why Divinity Is Larian’s Creative Future

With Divinity, Larian owns its world, systems, and creative direction. That freedom allows the studio to push boundaries without having to align with an external rulebook or established tabletop framework.

Vincke described the upcoming Divinity project as ambitious and experimental, acknowledging that innovation also brings risk. However, the studio believes taking those risks is essential to evolving the RPG genre.

What This Means For Baldur’s Gate Fans

Larian has made it clear that Baldur’s Gate 3 stands as its final entry in the series. The studio has no plans for Baldur’s Gate 4, expansions, or future D&D-based titles.

Instead, fans can expect a new Divinity game that builds on lessons learned from Baldur’s Gate 3 while embracing systems and ideas that were previously off-limits.

What’s Next For Larian Studios

Larian Studios has not announced a release window for the next Divinity game, but early access remains a possibility. The studio previously used that model successfully during the development of both Divinity: Original Sin and Baldur’s Gate 3.

For now, Larian’s focus is clear: creating an RPG the team is excited to make, even if that means leaving one of gaming’s most beloved franchises behind.
