Helldivers 2 Could Grow Into Its Own Sequel, Arrowhead Says

Arrowhead Game Studios is not in a hurry to move on from Helldivers 2. Instead of fast-tracking Helldivers 3, the studio’s leadership says it would rather bring sequel-level features into the current game, expanding its scale and ambition without abandoning the existing player base.

Speaking during a recent community Q&A, creative director and CCO Johan Pilestedt outlined several ideas that would fundamentally change what Helldivers 2 can be, including larger missions, more players per operation, and a broader sense of impact across the ongoing Galactic War.

Arrowhead Focuses On Expanding Helldivers 2

Pilestedt described the studio’s long-term vision as an evolution rather than a reset. The goal is to push Helldivers 2 forward with features typically reserved for a full sequel, as long as those additions strengthen the core experience.

This approach aligns with Arrowhead’s commitment to supporting the co-op shooter as long as players remain engaged, rather than fragmenting the community with a premature sequel.

Sequel-Level Features Arrowhead Is Considering

During the discussion, Pilestedt highlighted several ideas that represent a significant jump in scope for Helldivers 2. While none are confirmed, they illustrate the direction Arrowhead would like to explore.

  • Eight-player missions that double the current squad size
  • Larger open-world maps where multiple Helldiver teams may cross paths
  • Operations that directly affect other players and regions in the Galactic War

According to Pilestedt, these systems would emphasize scale, cooperation, and the feeling that each mission contributes to a shared conflict.

Why Helldivers 3 Is Not The Priority

Arrowhead has previously stated that Helldivers 3 is likely years away, if it happens at all. Pilestedt reiterated that building a full sequel from scratch is less appealing than expanding Helldivers 2 with meaningful upgrades.

From the studio’s perspective, evolving the existing game allows players to keep their progress, skills, and community ties while still experiencing dramatic changes in gameplay.

Technical Limits Still Apply

While the ideas sound ambitious, Pilestedt acknowledged that features like eight-player missions come with serious technical challenges. Performance, balance, and stability remain key concerns, especially in a game already known for chaotic combat and friendly fire.

For now, Arrowhead is prioritizing steady improvements and narrative arcs that fit within Helldivers 2’s current framework.

What This Means For Helldivers 2 Players

Rather than signaling the end of Helldivers 2, Arrowhead’s comments suggest a longer lifespan supported by bold updates. If even part of this vision materializes, Helldivers 2 could gradually transform into something closer to a sequel without ever being replaced.

Arrowhead has not shared a timeline for these changes, but ongoing discussions around future arcs indicate that the studio is thinking well beyond short-term updates.
