Guild Wars 3 is introducing a new momentum system designed to make movement and combat feel more connected than in a traditional MMORPG.
ArenaNet says the feature allows your character to carry speed and direction through different actions instead of stopping between movement abilities. That means transitions between riding, gliding, diving, wall running and combat are intended to feel continuous.
The system also affects how much damage some attacks can deal, giving movement a direct role in combat rather than treating traversal as a separate part of the game.

Momentum links exploration and combat
ArenaNet describes the momentum system as a way to remove the frequent stops that can appear in MMO movement.
In many MMORPGs, getting off a mount, ending a glide or using an ability can cause your character to lose movement before another action begins. Guild Wars 3 is being designed so that speed can continue through those transitions.
For example, you may be able to jump from a mountain, open a glider, dive, begin flying or move into a wall run without losing all of your existing momentum.
The aim is to create movement that feels closer to an action game while still keeping the large world and multiplayer structure expected from an MMORPG.
ArenaNet also says this approach is intended to apply across the wider game world rather than only in specific traversal sections.
Speed can change how attacks behave
Momentum also has a direct effect on combat.
A warrior demonstration showed how downward speed can change an attack when the character drops from above. Greater velocity can increase both the amount of damage and the size of the affected area.
The warrior can also run up walls before dropping back onto enemies, allowing traversal abilities to become part of an attack sequence.
This gives positioning and movement speed more importance during fights. Instead of simply reaching an enemy and then starting combat, your approach may influence how powerful the opening attack becomes.
The system could encourage you to think about terrain before engaging opponents, particularly when elevation or walls can be used to build momentum.
The environment can become part of combat
Guild Wars 3 is also using momentum for battlefield control.
Moving faster increases momentum, and that force can reportedly be used when interacting with enemies. One example involves knocking an opponent into a wall, which can stun the target and cause additional damage.
That means nearby terrain may have a larger tactical role than in previous entries.
Walls, cliffs and changes in elevation could potentially become useful parts of combat encounters rather than serving mainly as scenery or navigation obstacles.

ArenaNet says it wants the environment itself to contribute to how battles play out, with players using both movement and terrain to create advantages.
Guild Wars 3 is still some distance from release
ArenaNet has not announced a final release date for Guild Wars 3.
A beta is currently planned for fall 2027, which suggests the studio still has substantial development and testing ahead.
The game is being developed for PC and PlayStation 5.
The momentum system is one of the clearer examples so far of how ArenaNet wants Guild Wars 3 to move toward a more action focused style. By connecting traversal, speed, environmental interaction and attacks, the studio is trying to make movement an active part of combat instead of a separate system used mainly for travelling through the world.
