Google has started rolling out a long-requested feature that allows users to change their primary Gmail address without creating a new Google account. The update marks a major shift for Gmail, where usernames have remained permanently locked since the service launched.

How the new Gmail address change works
For the first time, Gmail users can select a new @gmail.com address and set it as their primary login. The original address automatically becomes an alias, continuing to receive emails and remain usable for sign-ins across Google services.
All existing data stays intact. Emails, Google Drive files, contacts, photos, YouTube history, and subscriptions remain tied to the account, with no migration required.
Limits and restrictions to know
Google has placed several guardrails on the feature. Users can change their Gmail address up to three times, with a mandatory 12-month waiting period between changes.
Old Gmail addresses stay permanently linked to the account and cannot be claimed by anyone else. Some third-party apps or Google services may temporarily display the old address until users sign out and back in.
Availability and rollout status
The feature is rolling out region by region rather than launching globally at once. Early signs of availability appeared through regional Google support documentation, suggesting limited testing before wider expansion.
