God of War Laufey has reportedly been in development plans for nearly a decade, with actress Deborah Ann Woll saying she first learned about the project in 2018. The game is set to explore a new side of the Norse era while continuing to build on the mysteries, characters, and mythology established in God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarök.
Woll, who plays Laufey, also known as Faye, said the project was discussed with her when she was first brought into the series. According to her comments, creative director Cory Barlog already had artwork showing Laufey alongside Phranque, a mysterious cosmic cube connected to the game’s larger story.
That suggests God of War Laufey is not a sudden spin off created after the success of the recent games. Instead, it appears to be part of a long term effort to expand the Norse world from a different perspective.
Laufey Will Expand the Norse Story Alongside Kratos’ Future
The new game is expected to take place alongside the events of God of War 2018. This creates room to revisit unanswered questions from the Norse saga without replacing Kratos’ main story.
Laufey was one of the most important characters in the modern God of War games, even though much of her role was revealed through memories, murals, and the impact she had on Kratos and Atreus. A game centered on her could explain more about her past, her connection to the giants, and the larger plan that shaped the events of the Norse storyline.
Woll said the project is a new direction for the franchise, but not a replacement for the classic Kratos focused games. Santa Monica Studio appears to be treating Laufey as an opportunity to deepen the universe while keeping the main God of War series moving forward.
| God of War Element | What It Could Mean for Laufey |
|---|---|
| Laufey as lead character | A new view of the Norse world outside Kratos’ journey |
| Parallel setting | Events may connect directly to God of War 2018 |
| Phranque | A larger mythology mystery tied to the story |
| Giant lore | More details about Faye’s people and their plans |
| Kratos games | Expected to continue separately |
| Norse saga clues | Older mysteries may receive new context |
The Game Could Answer Long Standing Questions About Faye
God of War 2018 left many details about Faye deliberately unclear. Players learned that she was a giant, that she understood important parts of prophecy, and that she played a major role in bringing Kratos and Atreus to Midgard.

However, her life before meeting Kratos has remained mostly unexplored. God of War Laufey could show how she became involved with the giants, what she knew about Odin’s plans, and why she made certain choices that shaped the future of her family.
The game may also explore the cosmic cube known as Phranque. The object appears to be important to the new story, although its true purpose has not been explained.
A New Lead Does Not Mean Kratos Is Leaving the Series
One concern for fans is whether a Laufey game means Santa Monica Studio is moving away from Kratos. Woll’s comments suggest that is not the case.
The studio appears to be building two paths within the franchise. One will continue the traditional God of War direction centered on Kratos, while the other will explore different characters, stories, and parts of the mythology.
This could give the series more freedom without forcing every major idea into one game. A Laufey led story can focus on prophecy, giants, secrets, and the unseen side of the Norse world, while future Kratos games can continue to develop his own journey.
God of War Laufey has not received a confirmed release date. Reports have suggested a launch in the first half of 2027, but that timing remains unconfirmed.
