Gears of War: E-Day has only been fully available for a few days, but PC modding has already started, with one early project replacing the game's main characters with familiar faces from Halo, Warhammer 40,000 and Star Wars.
The mod, called Incursion, was created by @WH40kWorkshop, who has previously made mods for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. It is currently available only for the PC version of Gears of War: E-Day.
Instead of altering gameplay systems, Incursion focuses on character replacement. Players can swap members of the campaign cast for characters from several other franchises.
Master Chief and Noble Team Can Replace the Main Cast
One of the most notable options allows the Gears cast to be replaced by Halo: Reach characters.
Marcus, Dom, Lucas and Mags can be changed into members of Noble Team. Noble 6 is the exception, with Master Chief taking that position instead.
The result allows players to go through the Gears of War: E-Day campaign with Halo characters while keeping the underlying missions and combat unchanged.
| Mod feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Mod name | Incursion |
| Platform | PC only |
| Main function | Character model replacement |
| Halo characters | Noble Team and Master Chief |
| Warhammer support | Space Marine character replacements |
| Star Wars option | Stormtrooper |
| Gears characters | Other campaign characters can also be used |
| Distribution | Nexus Mods |
Warhammer fans can also replace the main characters with Space Marines, while Star Wars players can use a Stormtrooper model.
The mod also appears to support other characters already found within E-Day's campaign, including Tai.
Other E-Day Mods Are Still Relatively Simple
The wider Gears of War: E-Day modding scene is still in its early stages.
Other projects currently available include HUD adjustments and mods that claim to improve performance.
There does not yet appear to be the same level of extensive gameplay modification seen in older PC games, but that is unsurprising given how recently E-Day launched.
Incursion is notable because it immediately demonstrates how quickly PC players are experimenting with character models and crossover ideas.
For players who have already completed the campaign or simply want a different visual experience, these replacements provide a lighthearted way to replay familiar sections.
Installing Incursion Requires Copying Files Into the Game Folder
Installing the mod is relatively straightforward.
Players first need to download Incursion from Nexus Mods and extract the files to a safe location.
They then need to find the Gears of War: E-Day installation directory. The exact location depends on whether the game was installed through Steam or the Xbox PC app.

The contents of the mod folder are copied directly into the game's installation directory. If Windows asks whether folders should be merged, players need to allow the merge.
The replacement models should then appear the next time the game is launched.
As with any unofficial modification, the mod is separate from the game's official content and is intended for the PC version.
Early Modding Shows What PC Players Can Do With E-Day
The mod does not introduce new missions, weapons or combat mechanics, but it gives players an early look at the kind of community content that could develop around E-Day.
Seeing Master Chief and Noble Team fighting the Locust fits especially well because both Halo and Gears of War have long been closely associated with Xbox.
The Warhammer character options also suit the heavy armor and combat focused presentation of Gears.
For now, Incursion is mainly a cosmetic experiment, but its arrival so soon after launch suggests that the PC version of Gears of War: E-Day could develop an active modding community if creators continue building new character replacements, visual adjustments and other modifications.
