Gears of War E Day Developers Say They Are Proud to Keep the Series as an Xbox Console Exclusive

The developers behind Gears of War: E Day say they are proud that the upcoming game remains an Xbox console exclusive, describing the franchise as an important part of Xbox's identity.

During a recent discussion about the game's development, members of The Coalition said they feel honored to continue carrying the Gears legacy forward. The studio views the series as one of Xbox's major franchises and sees E Day as an opportunity to reinforce that role.

The game is not completely exclusive to Xbox hardware because it is also available on Windows PC and Steam. However, among consoles, it is currently limited to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

That makes Gears of War: E Day one of the more prominent first party games still giving Microsoft's console lineup its own distinct identity.

The Coalition Sees Gears as Part of Xbox's DNA

The developers said Xbox continues to mean a great deal to many players, and they are pleased that Gears can once again serve as one of the platform's core franchises.

For The Coalition, the connection between Gears and Xbox goes back nearly two decades. The original Gears of War became one of the defining games of the Xbox 360 era, alongside franchises such as Halo and Forza.

E Day returns to that history by acting as a prequel, focusing on the beginning of the conflict between humanity and the Locust Horde.

The game's console exclusivity arrives during a period when Microsoft's broader platform strategy has become more flexible. A growing number of Xbox published games have appeared on competing consoles, making the decision to keep E Day limited to Xbox hardware more noticeable.

At the same time, Microsoft's PC strategy remains unchanged. Gears of War: E Day is available on Steam and Windows PC, meaning the game still reaches players outside the traditional Xbox console audience.

Early signs suggest there is strong demand on PC. During the early access period, the game reached around 20,000 concurrent players on Steam, the highest franchise concurrency figure recorded there so far. It also reached the top of the Steam sales chart in the United States ahead of its wider October 6 release.

Those figures only represent part of the audience because the game is also available through Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.

E Day Gives Xbox a Major Exclusive at an Important Time

Console exclusives can still play an important role in giving a platform its identity, even as publishers increasingly release games across multiple systems.

For Xbox, Gears has historically been one of the franchises most closely associated with the brand. Keeping E Day exclusive to Xbox consoles allows Microsoft to maintain at least some distinction between its console lineup and competing systems.

Whether that strategy translates into significantly higher Xbox hardware sales remains uncertain. The game can still be played on PC, which gives players another option without purchasing an Xbox console.

However, console players who want to experience E Day currently need Xbox hardware. That gives the game more strategic importance than a standard multiplatform release.

The Coalition's comments also suggest that the studio views this responsibility positively rather than treating exclusivity as a limitation. For the developers, continuing Gears as a major Xbox franchise is closely connected to the history of both the series and the platform.

Gears of War: E Day launches for the wider audience on October 6, 2026, across Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and Windows PC. It will also be available through Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, with Xbox Play Anywhere support included.
