Framework Cuts RAM on Some Laptop 13 Pro Preorders After LPCAMM2 Costs Double

Framework has changed the memory configurations of some Laptop 13 Pro preorders after receiving a much higher than expected price quote for LPCAMM2 modules.

The company expected memory prices to rise by a low to mid double digit percentage between the second and third quarters of 2026. Instead, its supplier increased prices to more than twice the level paid for earlier inventory.

Framework says covering the full increase would create too much financial risk. As a result, some customers with later preorders will receive a lower memory capacity than they originally selected. Those customers will also be charged the price associated with the smaller module rather than the original higher capacity option.

The changes affect 64GB and 32GB configurations, although the exact outcome depends on the product type and preorder batch.

Some 64GB Orders Will Be Reduced to 32GB

Framework has enough 64GB LPCAMM2 modules to fulfil Laptop 13 Pro preorders through Batch 4. Mainboard orders with 64GB are covered through Batch 7.

Orders placed after those batches will be changed from 64GB to 32GB. Customers affected by the change will pay the original price of the 32GB option.

The company has also allocated its remaining 32GB modules to DIY Edition and Mainboard preorders through the same covered batches. Later 32GB orders in those categories will be reduced to 16GB and charged at the original 16GB price.

Prebuilt Laptop 13 Pro systems originally ordered with 32GB will not be changed. Framework does not currently offer an equivalent prebuilt model with 16GB, so those orders will keep their selected capacity.

Customers receiving less memory will not be charged for the capacity they no longer receive. However, the lower configuration could affect workloads such as software development, virtual machines, large media projects, and local artificial intelligence tools.

New LPCAMM2 Orders Now Cost More

Framework has raised LPCAMM2 prices for newly placed preorders. The company says its new retail prices are still below the latest amount it must pay to obtain the modules.

The 16GB option remains at its previous price for now because Framework still has some lower cost inventory. Another increase is expected once that stock is exhausted.

LPCAMM2 combines the compact design and power efficiency of soldered laptop memory with the ability to replace the module. However, it is less widely available than standard laptop memory, leaving manufacturers with fewer sourcing options when supply becomes limited.

That smaller supplier base can create greater pricing pressure. Framework cannot easily move to another module type without redesigning the Laptop 13 Pro mainboard and internal layout.

Processor and Windows Costs Are Also Rising

Memory is not the only component affecting Framework’s pricing.

The company has adjusted system and Mainboard prices in preparation for higher Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processor costs. Increased Windows licensing charges and other semiconductor expenses are also contributing to the changes.

Not every part has become more expensive. Framework has reduced prices for some products, including 48GB DDR5 modules, the 8TB WD Black SN850X SSD, and the 1TB WD Blue SN7100.

Prices have increased for 16GB DDR5 modules, the 1TB SN850X, and the 4TB SN7100. These adjustments reflect changes in Framework’s own purchasing costs rather than a single increase applied across the full product range.

The situation highlights the difficulty smaller computer manufacturers face during a component shortage. Large companies can often negotiate long term supply agreements or purchase greater volumes in advance. A smaller brand may have less protection when a supplier suddenly raises prices.

Framework’s decision avoids charging affected customers the new cost of the original memory capacity, but it also means some buyers must accept a lower specification or reconsider their order. The company has not indicated that the reduced configurations will be temporary upgrades that can be corrected later.

LPCAMM2 remains replaceable, so owners may be able to install a larger module in the future. The cost and availability of those upgrades will depend on whether memory supply improves.
