Blizzard has officially announced Diablo V, revealing a very different setting for the next main entry in its action RPG series.
The game takes place roughly a century after Diablo IV and begins from a point the series has rarely explored. Diablo has already won, Sanctuary has fallen, and the heroes who once defended the world have been defeated.
Instead of trying to prevent an apocalypse, players will enter a world that has already lost that battle.
Diablo V is currently planned for release in Spring 2029.

Diablo V starts after Sanctuary has already fallen
The biggest change is the state of the world.
Previous Diablo games have generally placed players in the middle of an expanding demonic threat, giving them a chance to stop or contain disaster before it completely consumes Sanctuary.
Diablo V begins after that failure has already happened.
Blizzard says Diablo has triumphed and the world's heroes have been defeated. That creates a different starting point for the story, with the surviving characters facing an enemy that already controls much of the world.
The central question appears to focus on what people are willing to become when conventional heroism has already failed.
Blizzard has not yet explained who the playable characters will be, what classes will be available or how much Sanctuary has changed during the century since Diablo IV.
The long release window also means many of those details may still be years away.
Diablo IV will continue receiving new content
The announcement of Diablo V does not mean support for Diablo IV is ending.
Blizzard confirmed that Diablo IV will receive the Amazon as a new playable class during the first half of 2027.
Before that, the Season of Hell's Legacy is scheduled to begin on September 15, 2026.
The season is being positioned as a celebration of three decades of Diablo. It will include references to notable characters, enemies, locations and equipment from across the series.
That gives Blizzard several years to continue developing Diablo IV before Diablo V arrives.
A Diablo animated series is also in development
Blizzard is expanding the franchise beyond games as well.

A Diablo animated series is being developed with Netflix, although few details have been announced so far.
There is currently no confirmed release date, cast or story information for the adaptation. More details are expected later.
The announcement adds another project to Blizzard's wider effort to expand several of its major franchises following BlizzCon 2026.
Spring 2029 gives Blizzard a long development window
Diablo V is still several years from release.
Its Spring 2029 target means Blizzard has substantial time to develop the new version of Sanctuary and explain how the world changed after Diablo's victory.
The setting also gives the studio room to move beyond the familiar structure of previous games.
A world where the Lord of Terror has already won could change settlements, factions, enemies and the role of the player character in ways that are difficult to achieve when the main conflict is still unfolding.
For now, Blizzard has revealed the premise rather than the full game. More information about classes, gameplay systems, platforms and the structure of Sanctuary will likely arrive closer to release.
