Crimson Desert DLC Could Introduce New Islands and Expanded Maritime Gameplay

Crimson Desert may be preparing to expand its world toward the sea, with recent game updates adding environmental changes that could point to a maritime theme for the first DLC.

Pearl Abyss has already confirmed that an expansion is planned for 2026, but the studio has not revealed its content. Community observations now suggest that several areas outside the normal playable map are being changed, including coastal zones, underwater sections, and a location commonly referred to as South Island.

None of these changes confirm naval gameplay, but they provide several clues about where the expansion could be heading.

Recent updates are changing coastal and underwater areas

Players have noticed new environmental details appearing around the game's water based regions.

These include blue seaweed underwater, white sandy terrain along some coastlines, and improvements to the sea near the northern desert.

More notably, some underwater areas that were previously difficult or impossible to see have become clearer.

White coastal terrainExpanded shoreline work
South Island changesPossible preparation for future exploration

Submerged island east of mapPotential future location

The South Island area has attracted particular attention because it appears to be receiving continued changes despite sitting outside the normal explorable region.

That does not necessarily mean it will become part of the DLC, but repeated work on an inaccessible location is enough to make the possibility worth watching.

A submerged island is one of the strongest clues

One of the more interesting discoveries is a mysterious submerged island located east of the current map.

Its presence raises questions about whether Pearl Abyss is preparing new locations beneath or beyond the existing coastline.

If the first expansion does focus more heavily on the sea, the studio could potentially add island exploration, underwater areas, or transport systems built around boats and larger vessels.

There is still no confirmation that players will directly control ships.

For now, naval gameplay remains speculation based on the environmental changes found in recent updates.

Naval combat would fit Crimson Desert's broad design

A maritime expansion would fit the game's willingness to mix different types of gameplay into its open world.

Crimson Desert already combines large scale exploration, combat, traversal, side activities, and unusual optional systems.

Adding ships or sea based combat would significantly broaden that structure.

A system inspired by games with dedicated naval exploration could allow players to move between islands, fight from ships, search underwater areas, or encounter enemies that cannot be reached through conventional land travel.

The scale of such a feature would depend heavily on how much of the ocean Pearl Abyss intends to make interactive.

The DLC could also expand exploration without full naval combat

There is another possibility.

The new coastal and underwater work may support a sea focused expansion without introducing complex ship combat.

Pearl Abyss could instead add new islands, underwater locations, coastal settlements, or scripted travel between regions.

That approach would still make use of the environmental changes while requiring less of a mechanical overhaul.

The appearance of a submerged island especially supports the possibility of underwater exploration becoming more important.

Pearl Abyss has not confirmed the DLC theme

The developer has not officially said that the first Crimson Desert expansion will be maritime focused.

The current clues come from changes discovered by players, so they should be treated as evidence of development activity rather than confirmation of final content.

Plans can also change before release, especially for areas that are still outside the playable map.

What is confirmed is that Pearl Abyss plans to release DLC in 2026 and is also continuing work on a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game.

If the altered islands, coastline, and underwater areas are connected to the expansion, Crimson Desert could be preparing to push Pywel beyond its existing land based structure and into a much larger sea focused experience.
