Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced gives you access to Jackdaw upgrades soon after Edward takes control of the ship, but you should not spend your early materials randomly. The upgrade menu opens with several tempting options, and it is easy to spread Reales and resources across too many categories. That slows down progress and can leave the Jackdaw underpowered when stronger ships begin appearing more often.
The best early strategy is to focus on upgrades that improve damage and survivability. That means prioritizing Round and Heated Shot, Broadside Cannons, and Hull upgrades before spending heavily on less important ship systems. These upgrades give the Jackdaw a stronger foundation for naval combat, which then makes resource farming, boarding, and progression much smoother.
Your early goal should be simple: destroy ships faster and survive longer while doing it. Once the Jackdaw can win fights more consistently, every other upgrade becomes easier to afford.
Round Shot, Broadside Cannons, and Hull upgrades give the Jackdaw the strongest early boost
Round and Heated Shot upgrades should be near the top of your list because they increase the damage your ship deals. Stronger shots shorten naval battles and make it easier to weaken enemy ships before boarding them. This is useful throughout the game, but it matters even more early on, when the Jackdaw does not yet have the durability or firepower to take on tougher enemies comfortably.
Broadside Cannons are just as important. Upgrading them increases the number of cannons that fire from the side of the ship, which directly raises your damage output. Since broadside attacks are one of the Jackdaw’s main offensive tools, improving them early gives you better control in most ship battles.
Hull upgrades are the defensive side of the same plan. They increase the Jackdaw’s health, allowing you to survive longer against stronger ships, crowded naval encounters, and mistakes during positioning. Early naval fights can become risky if you focus only on damage, so Hull upgrades help keep your progress stable.
| Upgrade | Why you should prioritize it | Main benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Round and Heated Shot | Raises direct ship damage | Ends fights faster |
| Broadside Cannons | Adds more cannon fire from the ship’s sides | Improves main attack power |
| Hull | Increases Jackdaw health | Helps you survive stronger enemies |
| Harbourmaster at Great Inagua | Unlocks higher upgrade tiers later | Supports long term progression |
| Other ship upgrades | Useful after core upgrades are stable | Better saved for later |
These three upgrade paths also improve the game’s money and material loop. A stronger Jackdaw can plunder more ships, which gives you more Reales and resources. Those resources can then be reinvested into the ship, making the next set of battles easier. This cycle is one of the most important parts of Black Flag Resynced’s progression.

You should also pay attention to the Harbourmaster at Great Inagua. Improving the Harbourmaster is required to unlock higher upgrade tiers, so it becomes important once your basic ship setup is in place. Early on, though, your immediate focus should remain on making the Jackdaw strong enough to win regular fights without burning through too many resources.
Other upgrades can still be useful, but they should come later. Mortars, storage, and other ship systems all have value depending on how you play, but they do not provide the same early impact as stronger shots, more broadside fire, and extra health. If you buy too many secondary upgrades first, you may find yourself short on materials when you really need core combat improvements.
The best early Jackdaw upgrade route is clear. Start with Round and Heated Shot to improve damage, upgrade Broadside Cannons to make your main attacks more powerful, and invest in Hull upgrades so the ship can withstand tougher battles. After that, use the stronger Jackdaw to farm ships more efficiently, improve Great Inagua’s Harbourmaster, and unlock the higher tier upgrades that turn Edward’s ship into a real threat across the Caribbean.
