Arc Raiders Frozen Trail Update Adds New Map, ARC Enemies, Weapon Upgrades and Outposts

Arc Raiders is getting one of its largest updates yet on October 8, with Frozen Trail adding a new map, four ARC enemy types, weapon upgrades, personal outposts, new guns, gadgets and a reworked skill tree.

The free 2.0 update marks a broader shift in how Embark Studios is handling major content drops. Instead of releasing large changes more frequently, the studio is now allowing more time between major updates so each one can contain substantially more content.

Frozen Trail appears to be the first major result of that strategy.

Pendola Pass introduces a frozen high level region

The centerpiece of the update is Pendola Pass, a snowy mountain area located north of the Rust Belt.

Embark describes it as its most ambitious map so far.

The region is surrounded by the remains of a gigantic Emperor and introduces a new environmental condition called Flash Freeze.

Players who remain outside for too long will be punished by the extreme cold, adding another survival consideration to exploration and combat.

The environmental hazard should make Pendola Pass play differently from existing locations rather than simply offering a visual change.

Four new ARC enemies are coming

Frozen Trail introduces several new ARC types designed around different combat roles.

The Frigate is a massive airborne carrier intended as a challenge for experienced players. Embark says it cannot be completely destroyed, suggesting encounters may focus on survival, disabling components or extracting safely rather than simply eliminating it.

The Bully is a four legged ARC related to the Leaper. It uses hit and run tactics designed to wear players down over time.

The Skulker takes the opposite approach by staying at ground level and attacking from a distance.

The Hydra is a stationary turret capable of targeting three players at once.

Together, the new enemies should increase the variety of encounters and make team positioning more important.

Weapon Amplification adds special gun abilities

The update is also introducing a new progression system called Weapon Amplification.

Using a new research bench, players will be able to upgrade supported weapons into an amplification tier that grants unique abilities.

Examples include flammable ammunition and rapid fire effects.

Fifteen weapons will support amplification when the system launches.

This gives players another way to specialize equipment beyond normal weapon statistics and attachments.

Two new guns are also being added.

The Stiletto is a light ammo battle rifle positioned as an early game alternative to the Renegade.

The Bantum is a fast firing revolver designed to compete with the Anvil.

Personal outposts add a new customization system

Frozen Trail also introduces personal outposts located outside Speranza.

Players will be able to develop these spaces using furniture, decorations, trinkets and upgrade benches.

For now, the outposts are not fully explorable spaces that players can freely walk around.

Executive producer Aleksander Grøndal said Embark is considering expanding the feature in the future.

Even in its initial form, the system adds a more personal progression layer outside combat and extraction runs.

Skill tree choices will matter more

The skill tree is also being overhauled.

Embark is removing some existing abilities and adding new ones, while changing progression so a single Raider cannot unlock every skill.

Players will have to choose between different abilities, creating more distinct builds.

The studio believes the change will support a wider range of playstyles and make progression decisions more meaningful.

Players will still be able to adjust their builds and experiment with different combinations.

Weapon stencils provide reusable cosmetic options

Frozen Trail adds a new gun skin system based on stencils.

Players can find stencils and apply them to weapons as reusable cosmetic skins.

If a weapon is lost, the stencil will need to be applied again to another gun.

Stencil blueprints can also be discovered or unlocked using the research station.

This provides another progression path for players interested in customization without tying every cosmetic directly to a single weapon.

Grapple hook adds a new mobility option

Several gadgets are joining the game as well.

The most significant is a grapple hook that can attach to points in the environment and allow players to swing in different directions.

The tool can apparently also attach to ARC machines, potentially allowing players to use moving enemies as temporary transportation.

A banjo and camera tool are being added alongside it, giving players some noncombat options for interacting with the world.

The grapple hook in particular could have a major effect on movement because it appears to provide more freedom than a simple fixed point traversal tool.

Frozen Trail reflects Arc Raiders' slower update schedule

Embark previously moved Arc Raiders toward a six month gap between major updates.

Frozen Trail shows what the studio is trying to achieve with that change.

Instead of centering the update around one new map or a small progression change, version 2.0 touches several major systems at once.

The update adds new enemies, weapons, progression systems, environmental mechanics, cosmetics, social customization and movement tools.

Frozen Trail launches as a free update on October 8, and its scale suggests Embark is prioritizing fewer but larger content releases as Arc Raiders continues to evolve.
