AMD's Ryzen 5 8600G is $176.90 at Amazon at the time of writing. The saving checks out twice against AMD's own published numbers.
The price sits 23% under the $229 suggested etail price AMD set for the chip at launch. It also lands $14.10 under the $191.00 that AMD's own US store charges for the same processor.
Amazon shows a 23% cut from a $229.00 list price, and that figure matches AMD's January 2024 launch announcement. The gap comes to $52.10.
The 8600G is a 6-core, 12-thread Zen 4 processor with a 4.3 GHz base clock and boost up to 5 GHz. AMD rates it at a 65W default TDP, configurable between 45W and 65W.
That matters because the integrated Radeon 760M, with 8 graphics cores at 2800 MHz, can carry a build with no graphics card in it. AMD also gives this model an AI engine rated at up to 16 TOPS, and a leaked test put the newer Ryzen AI 5 435G close to it.

The PCIe lane budget is where the 8000G family gives ground
AMD's spec page for the 8600G lists PCIe 4.0 and 20 native lanes, 16 of them usable. A non-APU chip on the same socket, the Ryzen 5 7600, lists PCIe 5.0 with 28 lanes and 24 usable.
The graphics-free 8400F in the same generation carries the identical 20-lane, 16-usable budget. The shortfall belongs to the silicon, not to the board.
ASUS documents the practical effect on its spec page for the PRIME B650M-A. With a Ryzen 9000 or 7000 chip installed, the single x16-length slot runs in x16 mode and the primary M.2 slot supports PCIe 5.0 x4.
With a Ryzen 8000 series chip in the socket, ASUS lists that same slot as supporting x8 or x4 mode, and the primary M.2 slot as PCIe 4.0 x4. ASUS adds that specifications vary by CPU type.
For a buyer who starts on the integrated graphics and adds a card later, that is half the slot width or less on this class of board. The fastest storage slot also loses its PCIe 5.0 mode for as long as the 8600G stays fitted.
The socket itself is not the limit, since AMD has said it will keep AM5 alive through 2029. Dropping a non-APU Ryzen into the same board later restores the full x16 slot and the PCIe 5.0 M.2 mode.
The bundled cooler and Intel's nearest same-generation chip
AMD's store page lists the thermal solution for the boxed part as Wraith Stealth, and the Amazon listing repeats that the cooler is included. On a 65W chip, that removes a line item from a budget build.
Intel's closest part with graphics from the same quarter is the Core i5-14400. Intel's recommended customer price for it is $221.00 to $231.00, essentially the bracket AMD launched the 8600G in.

Intel's UHD 730 runs 24 execution units at 1.55 GHz, well short of the eight-core Radeon 760M. Intel's graphics-free Core i5-14400F costs $196.00 to $206.00, but needs a discrete card.
The Ryzen 5 7600 remains the sharper comparison, with double the L3 cache and the full 24 usable PCIe 5.0 lanes. Its $229 launch price has been reported rather than published by AMD, so treat that figure carefully.
