AMD Launches Ryzen AI 400 Chips with Major Performance and Efficiency Gains

AMD used CES 2026 to unveil its Ryzen AI 400 Series, a new generation of AI-focused processors designed to push on-device intelligence, longer battery life, and stronger integrated graphics across laptops and compact desktops.

What AMD announced

The Ryzen AI 400 lineup targets the rapidly growing Copilot+ PC category, combining Zen 5 CPU cores, RDNA 3.5 integrated graphics, and a second-generation XDNA 2 NPU. AMD positions the chips as a major step forward for local AI workloads such as real-time translation, image generation, background removal, and AI-assisted productivity tools.

Big jump in AI performance

AMD says top-tier Ryzen AI 400 models deliver up to 60 TOPS of AI compute from the NPU alone. That figure marks a substantial increase over earlier Ryzen AI parts and allows more AI tasks to run locally instead of relying on cloud processing. The company also highlighted improved responsiveness when running multiple AI features simultaneously.

Faster, more efficient CPUs and graphics

Beyond AI, AMD emphasized broad performance and efficiency gains. Zen 5 cores bring higher IPC and better power scaling, while RDNA 3.5 graphics improve gaming, creative workloads, and media acceleration on thin-and-light systems. AMD claims noticeable gains in content creation and multitasking at similar or lower power levels than previous generations.

Wider product stack

The Ryzen AI 400 family spans Ryzen AI 5, AI 7, and AI 9 tiers, giving OEMs flexibility across mainstream and premium designs. AMD also confirmed Ryzen AI PRO variants aimed at business laptops, with added security and manageability features. At the high end, Ryzen AI Max+ chips target ultra-premium laptops and small-form-factor PCs with higher power budgets.

Developer and platform push

Alongside the silicon, AMD introduced the Ryzen AI Halo platform for developers. The company says it can support extremely large local AI models when paired with systems offering up to 128 GB of unified memory. AMD also expanded its software stack with updated ROCm support and new AI features in its Adrenalin software.

When to expect it

AMD expects the first laptops powered by Ryzen AI 400 processors to ship in Q1 2026, with desktop and compact PC systems following in Q2 2026 from major OEM partners.

With Ryzen AI 400, AMD clearly signals that on-device AI now sits at the center of its client CPU roadmap.
