AMD's Answer to DLSS 5 Will Probably Be Exclusive to RDNA 5, Leaker Claims

AMD's answer to NVIDIA's DLSS 5 will "probably" be exclusive to its next-generation RDNA 5 graphics cards, according to the pseudonymous leaker Kepler_L2. The claim rests on a one-word answer given in reply to another user's question, and concerns a feature AMD has never publicly confirmed.

What AMD has confirmed is a very different thing. Its current upscaling roadmap already splits Radeon owners by GPU generation, and NVIDIA's own DLSS 5 launch is limited to one series of cards.

What Kepler_L2 actually wrote about AMD neural lighting

The posts appeared on September 8, 2026, in an RDNA 5 speculation thread on a hardware enthusiast forum. "AMD will have their own version of 'Neural Lighting' like DLSS5 next-gen," Kepler_L2 wrote in the first.

Another forum member then asked whether this meant something like ray reconstruction. Kepler_L2 answered "No, that's just denoising," and, when asked if the feature would be exclusive to RDNA 5, replied "Probably, this stuff is pretty heavy" in the same post.

A third post described how the leaker thinks AMD's version should work. The model should get "direct access to 3D game data such as geometry/BVH, Ray data, depth buffers, materials, etc. so it doesn't have to guess," Kepler_L2 wrote.

Kepler_L2 has a record of pre-release AMD hardware leaks, but no insider role at AMD has been verified. AMD has made no public announcement of a DLSS 5 style neural lighting feature, and it has not given a product name, a ship date or hardware requirements for one.

AMD's published illumination research names no GPU

The closest official material is research on GPUOpen, AMD's developer site. On August 20, 2026, AMD published a neural method for real-time indirect illumination built around a 2.19 million parameter model.

That model ran at 45.56 ms at 512x512 resolution on an AMD Instinct MI250 accelerator, without inference optimization. A second paper, published September 9, uses a one-step diffusion model to produce temporally stable indirect lighting.

Neither paper names a target GPU generation, a product or a release date. They are research, not announcements.

NVIDIA's DLSS 5 support is official and limited to RTX 50

NVIDIA released DLSS 5 on September 1, 2026, with NBA 2K27 as the first game. According to NVIDIA's announcement, it runs on "all GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and laptops, and GeForce NOW" at launch.

NVIDIA says its 3D-Guided Neural Rendering uses AI to add lighting and materials on top of the game's own geometry, textures and lighting buffers. It runs locally on a single GPU at up to 4K.

RTX 40 owners may get it later. NVIDIA has reportedly said it plans to expand official support to the RTX 40 Series once RTX 50 performance is more fully tuned, without giving a date.

Enthusiasts have not waited, though results so far are mixed, as with the DLSS 5 hybrid NVFP4 mod. Older DLSS features have also been pushed onto unsupported cards, including Multi Frame Generation mods for RTX 40, 30 and 20 GPUs.

Which Radeon GPUs get AMD's confirmed FSR features

AMD's own roadmap already ties its newest features to newer hardware. Its FSR Redstone suite includes ML upscaling, frame generation, Ray Regeneration and Radiance Caching, and AMD says the ML-powered features require RDNA 4.

RX 7000 support for FSR 4 ML upscaling arrived with AMD's FSR SDK 2.3 in June. AMD SVP Jack Huynh said on X that RDNA 2 players have "something exciting coming in early 2027," with FSR Upscaling coming to those cards.

The delay has been reported to stem from hardware. RDNA 3 has dedicated AI accelerators, while RDNA 2 must run the model on shader cores that the game also needs.

What is still unconfirmed

AMD's habit of tying ML features to newer hardware is on record, but the RDNA 5 exclusivity claim remains a leaker's one-word answer. Timing is also unsettled, since the next Radeon generation has reportedly shifted to 2028.

AMD has not published a name, requirements or a timeline for any DLSS 5 rival. Frame Generation and Ray Regeneration also have no announced timeline for RX 7000 or RX 6000 cards, so the clearest near-term date for Radeon owners is still the early 2027 upscaling update for RDNA 2.
