Ace Combat 8 may struggle to run on the Steam Deck if its newly listed PC system requirements reflect the final level of optimisation.

The upcoming flight combat game requires relatively powerful hardware even at its minimum settings. According to the current specifications, the lowest supported configuration targets an upscaled 1080p resolution at only 30 frames per second while using the Low graphics preset.

That target is demanding enough to create concern for Valve’s handheld. The Steam Deck has a lower power processor and integrated graphics system that sit well below the listed desktop hardware in several areas.

The game is scheduled to launch on September 28 and is available to preorder for $69.99. Its system requirements could still change before release, but the current figures suggest that Steam Deck performance may be difficult to achieve without major compromises.

Minimum requirements already depend on upscaling

Ace Combat 8 lists an AMD Ryzen 5 3600X processor, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card, 16 GB of memory, and 125 GB of storage as its minimum PC configuration.

Those parts are expected to produce 30 frames per second at an upscaled 1080p resolution using Low settings. The reliance on upscaling is important because the game is not targeting a native 1080p image even with an RTX 2060.

The recommended specification is also unusually demanding. It calls for an RTX 3070 and 32 GB of memory to reach 60 frames per second at an upscaled 1080p resolution using the Medium preset.

An RTX 3070 remains much more powerful than the Steam Deck’s integrated graphics. If that card only reaches the recommended target through upscaling, the handheld may need to operate at a much lower resolution and use additional performance reductions.

Steam Deck hardware falls below the listed target

The Steam Deck uses a custom AMD processor with four Zen 2 CPU cores and an integrated RDNA 2 graphics unit. Its design prioritises efficiency within a limited power budget rather than desktop level performance.

Many games can still run well because the handheld’s display uses a resolution of 1280 by 800. Rendering fewer pixels can significantly reduce the graphics workload compared with 1080p.

However, Ace Combat 8 may present other difficulties. High speed flight requires the game to stream terrain, effects, aircraft, and distant scenery quickly. Large environments and detailed weather systems can place pressure on both the processor and graphics hardware.

The listed Ryzen 5 3600X also has six desktop CPU cores and a much higher power limit. Although system requirement lists do not always provide an exact performance comparison, the gap suggests that the Steam Deck may face processor limits as well as graphics limits.

The 16 GB minimum memory requirement matches the Steam Deck’s total unified memory capacity. That same memory is shared by the operating system, processor, and graphics unit, leaving less available to the game than on a desktop with separate system and video memory.

Ace Combat 7 was much easier to run

The concern becomes clearer when the new requirements are compared with Ace Combat 7.

The previous game could target 1080p at 60 frames per second on much older hardware without depending on upscaling. Its recommended graphics requirements were also based on a GPU several years older than the RTX 3070.

Ace Combat 8 uses newer visual technology and appears considerably more detailed, so higher requirements are expected. Improved lighting, aircraft models, environments, weather, and effects all increase the workload.

The issue is the limited performance attached to the listed hardware. Requiring an RTX 2060 for upscaled 1080p at 30 frames per second on Low settings suggests that the game may not scale down easily.

A recommended RTX 3070 target that still uses Medium settings and upscaling also raises questions about performance on mainstream desktop systems.

A playable Steam Deck version is still possible

The system requirements do not prove that Ace Combat 8 will be completely unplayable on the Steam Deck. Official specifications are often conservative, and developers sometimes improve performance before release.

The handheld’s lower display resolution could help. A target of 720p or lower with aggressive upscaling may reduce the graphics demand enough to reach 30 frames per second in some areas.

Players could also lower effects, shadows, reflections, crowd detail, and other settings if the game provides enough options. Dynamic resolution could offer further assistance during demanding scenes.

Even then, a stable experience is far from guaranteed. Frame time consistency may become a greater problem than average performance, especially during busy missions with many aircraft and visual effects.

The 125 GB installation size will also consume a large portion of the storage available on lower capacity Steam Deck models.

Ace Combat 8 may still receive optimisation updates, and independent testing will be needed before its handheld compatibility can be judged with confidence. Based on the current requirements, however, players should not expect reliable Steam Deck performance without substantial visual compromises.
