3dSen 2.0 Update Improves Steam Deck Performance and Adds New 3D Rendering Features for NES Games

The 3D NES emulator 3dSen has received a major version 2.0 update, introducing significant performance improvements for Steam Deck alongside a redesigned interface, new visual effects, and better controller support.

The emulator allows players to experience classic Nintendo Entertainment System games in three dimensional environments created from the original 2D graphics.

Unlike conventional NES emulators, 3dSen converts supported games into interactive voxel based scenes with lighting, shadows, and additional visual effects.

The latest update improves the native Linux version, which is now recommended for Steam Deck instead of running the Windows version through Proton.

More than 100 NES games are supported, including titles from the Mega Man and Final Fantasy series.

3dSen 2.0 Improves Native Linux Performance on Steam Deck

One of the main changes in version 2.0 is a significant overhaul of the emulator's Linux implementation.

The developers have improved performance, memory usage, loading behavior, and general stability, making the native version better suited to Steam Deck.

The update also reduces stuttering during game loading and addresses several rendering problems, including unwanted lines and gaps between 3D tiles.

Steam Deck players are encouraged to use Steam Linux Runtime rather than a Windows compatibility layer.

To enable the recommended configuration, open 3dSen's Properties menu in Steam, navigate to Compatibility, and select Steam Linux Runtime as the preferred compatibility tool.

The update also introduces full gamepad navigation, allowing players to browse their libraries and change settings without relying on mouse controls.

An integrated on screen keyboard makes searching for games easier when using a handheld device.

New Retina Rendering Mode Changes How NES Games Look

3dSen 2.0 introduces Retina, a new rendering mode that changes how the emulator presents three dimensional environments.

Traditional voxel rendering builds objects using visible blocks, while Retina creates smoother and more rounded surfaces within the converted scenes.

Players can enable the feature through Settings, Display, and Render Mode.

The update also expands visual customization with adjustable reflections, shading, pixel shadows, voxel grooves, and world curvature.

These effects are disabled by default, allowing players to enable individual features according to their preferences.

The original Classic rendering style remains available.

Anti aliasing options now include Off, 2x, and 4x, with 2x selected by default.

Controller Support and Save Features Receive Improvements

The update introduces several quality of life improvements designed to make the emulator easier to use.

Players can now resume their previous session after reopening 3dSen or choose to discard that session and begin again.

Run Ahead is enabled by default to reduce input latency, potentially making fast paced games more responsive.

A new Soft Reset option restarts games in a manner similar to pressing the reset button on an original NES console.

Additional improvements address save states, rewind functionality, audio, and application settings.

The developers have also fixed profile specific problems affecting Super Mario Bros., Punch-Out!!, and Final Fantasy.

3dSen Remains Available for $14.99 on Steam

Beyond Steam Deck improvements, version 2.0 introduces a native 64 bit Windows build and native Apple Silicon support for macOS.

The emulator is available for $14.99 on Steam.

It currently carries a Steam Deck Playable rating because a community controller configuration is required, although the improved gamepad support could make the handheld experience more convenient.

The developers have not confirmed whether the update will change its official compatibility rating.

With its improved Linux performance and expanded rendering options, 3dSen 2.0 provides Steam Deck owners with additional ways to revisit supported NES games while retaining their original gameplay.
