Xbox Series X may gain a useful advantage over the base PlayStation 5 if AMD FSR 4.1 comes to current generation consoles. A recent analysis suggests Microsoft’s console has stronger hardware support for the upscaling technology, along with a development setup that could make it easier for studios to add it to games.
FSR 4.1 is AMD’s newer upscaling technology, designed to improve image quality and performance. If it reaches Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PlayStation 5, it could help games run better without requiring developers to fully rebuild their graphics pipelines.
The main point is hardware capability. Xbox Series X is said to offer 48.6 TOPS of INT8 performance, while the base PlayStation 5 is listed at 20.6 TOPS with fallback support. Xbox Series S sits lower at 16.0 TOPS. PlayStation 5 Pro remains far ahead with 300 TOPS, but that console already has Sony’s own PSSR upscaling system.

The Xbox Series X advantage may not only come from raw hardware. The Xbox software development kit reportedly already includes easier support for newer AMD FSR versions, including FSR 3 and later. That could make implementation more direct for developers.
PlayStation may need more work. The analysis claims Sony’s SDK support for AMD FSR has not moved much beyond older versions, around FSR 2.2. If true, Sony would need to improve its tools before developers can add FSR 4.1 as smoothly on the base PlayStation 5.

That does not mean PlayStation 5 cannot run FSR 4.1. The base console should still have enough hardware power to benefit from the technology. The difference is that Xbox Series X may be able to run a higher quality version, while also giving developers a simpler path to adoption.
This could matter more than usual because the current console generation may last longer than expected. Even after the next Xbox and PlayStation arrive, support for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 is unlikely to disappear quickly. Many games may continue to launch across old and new hardware for years.
If AMD FSR 4.1 becomes widely supported, it could help current consoles stay useful for longer. For Xbox Series X, it may also create one of the clearer technical wins over the base PlayStation 5 late in the generation.
