Xbox studio World's Edge appears to have cancelled an upcoming project as part of a wider reorganization that moved the team under Activision.
The change was revealed by a former senior software engineer who said the studio was reorganized under the Activision umbrella, its next project was cancelled, and a large part of the team was laid off.
World's Edge is best known for its work on the Age of Empires and Age of Mythology franchises, but the identity of the cancelled project has not been confirmed.
| Detail | Reported information |

| Project status | Reportedly cancelled |
| Layoffs | Large portion of the team reportedly affected |
| Cancelled game's identity | Not confirmed |
| Known franchises | Age of Empires, Age of Mythology |
| Future plans | Remaining team expected to continue under Activision |
Cancelled project has not been identified
The clearest information comes from a former World's Edge employee who described the internal changes in a departure message.
According to that account, the studio's next project was cancelled during the reorganization and a large number of employees lost their jobs.
What that project actually was remains unknown.
There has been speculation that it could have been Age of Empires 5, but the source does not confirm this.
It is also possible that the cancelled work involved additional content for an existing Age of Empires title rather than a completely new game.
Microsoft did not identify any cancelled World's Edge projects in its earlier public statement regarding the layoffs, leaving the scope and stage of development unclear.
World's Edge was reportedly hit hard by layoffs
The studio appears to have been significantly affected by the latest round of Xbox restructuring.
The report mentions suggestions that roughly half of the team may have been let go, although that figure has not been formally confirmed.
Former creative director Adam Isgreen also referred to multiple colleagues being affected and said the team had been working on plans for what would come next.
His comments suggest that World's Edge had additional development plans beyond its currently released projects, even if the cancelled project was still at an early stage.
The exact number of employees remaining at the studio is not provided.
Age of Empires future remains uncertain
World's Edge has played a central role in Microsoft's modern Age of Empires strategy.
The studio has been involved with Age of Empires releases as well as Age of Mythology, making the restructuring particularly important for the future of those franchises.
There is currently no confirmation that Microsoft intends to stop developing Age related games.
In fact, Isgreen's comments indicate the studio had broader plans before the layoffs, and he expressed hope that the remaining team could eventually continue some of that work.
That leaves open the possibility that parts of the studio's roadmap could survive even if one individual project has been cancelled.
Activision will now oversee the studio
The most concrete organizational change is that World's Edge will now operate under Activision.
That represents a significant shift in where the studio sits inside Microsoft's gaming structure.
The report does not explain how Activision will manage World's Edge, whether the studio's leadership will change further, or how future projects will be selected.

It also remains unclear whether the Age of Empires series will continue with the same development structure.
For now, World's Edge remains active, but its future direction will be shaped under Activision rather than its previous Xbox organization.
The cancelled project is therefore only one part of a broader restructuring.
Until Microsoft or the studio provides more detail, the identity of the project, its development status, and the long term plans for World's Edge remain uncertain.
