Microsoft’s October 2026 Windows 11 update brings a wider set of everyday improvements alongside its security fixes, including better Bluetooth reliability, restored File Explorer previews and new customization options for the Copilot key.
The update is distributed as KB5127648 and is available for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2.
While the security fixes become available immediately after installation, some of the new interface features are being introduced gradually and may take several weeks to appear on every compatible PC.
Bluetooth Audio and Microphone Reliability Gets Attention
Bluetooth receives several fixes in the October update.
Microsoft is addressing problems involving Bluetooth audio, microphones and Bluetooth LE Audio, along with issues affecting the Bluetooth section of the Settings app.
These changes target an area that has caused recurring problems on Windows PCs, particularly when switching between audio playback and microphone use with wireless headsets.
| October update feature | What changes |
|---|---|
| Bluetooth | Audio, microphone and LE Audio fixes |
| Copilot key | Can be remapped |
| File Explorer | Internet downloaded file previews return |
| Emoji | Emoji 17.0 added |
| Touchpad | One finger and automatic scrolling improvements |
| OneDrive | Smartphone photo backup through Settings |
| Accessibility | New full screen app setting |
| Desktop backgrounds | DIB image support |
The update does not guarantee that every Bluetooth problem across every device will disappear, since hardware drivers and individual accessories can still affect reliability.
Copilot Key Can Finally Be Reassigned
Microsoft is also making the dedicated Copilot keyboard key more flexible.
By default, Windows now allows the Copilot key to be reassigned to a limited number of functions, including the right Ctrl key, the context menu or Windows Search.
If you want more control, Microsoft PowerToys can be used to remap the key to other applications or commands.

That makes the physical Copilot button more useful for people who do not regularly use Microsoft's AI assistant.
The option is particularly relevant as dedicated Copilot keys have become common across newer Windows laptops.
File Explorer Previews Return for Downloaded Files
File Explorer can once again preview certain files downloaded from the internet.
PDF files are among the supported formats.
HTML files require an additional action, with a new Preview button allowing you to view the file after confirming that you want to open the preview.
This restores functionality that had been restricted because downloaded files can carry additional security risks.
The change attempts to preserve those protections while making File Explorer's preview pane useful again for common downloaded documents.
Emoji 17.0 and Accessibility Changes Are Included
Windows 11 is also adopting the Emoji 17.0 set.
New additions mentioned in the update include a distorted face, ballet dancer, orca and a hairy creature.
Microsoft has also added an Accessibility setting that allows applications to open directly in full screen mode.
The Magnifier toolbar receives updates as well.
Touchpad navigation is being expanded with one finger scrolling and automatic scrolling options, giving users more flexibility when interacting with Windows without a mouse.
OneDrive Photo Backup Moves Into Settings
Another addition lets you configure smartphone photo backup to OneDrive directly through Windows Settings.
This gives Microsoft another place to surface its cross device backup features without requiring users to navigate separately through the OneDrive application.
A new Tips widget is also being introduced for both the Widgets interface and the lock screen.
Desktop backgrounds now support DIB images.
At the same time, Microsoft has removed its PC to PC migration tool from this release.
The update also includes fixes for file version history and domain trust problems.
KB5127648 Build Numbers
After installing the October update, the relevant Windows versions move to the following builds:
| Windows 11 version | Build after KB5127648 |
|---|---|
| 26H2 | 26300.9711 |
| 25H2 | 26200.9711 |
| 24H2 | 26100.9711 |
Windows 11 24H2 is listed as no longer supported in the supplied material, although the October update is still identified with build 26100.9711.
You can check for KB5127648 through Settings, then Windows Update, followed by Check for updates if the package has not already appeared automatically.
Some interface additions may still be missing immediately after installation because Microsoft is using a gradual rollout. Security fixes, however, are applied as soon as the update is successfully installed.
