The WD Black SN8100 2TB PCIe 5.0 SSD is on sale again, giving PC builders a faster storage option at a much lower price than its inflated MSRP.
The 2TB model is currently listed at $459.99 at Best Buy, down from $1,057.99. That is still not cheap, but it is a lot more reasonable for a high end PCIe 5.0 drive, especially while memory and storage prices remain under pressure from AI demand.
The SN8100 is one of WD Black’s fastest consumer SSDs. It offers read speeds up to 14,900MB/s and write speeds up to 11,000MB/s. That is roughly double what many strong PCIe 4.0 SSDs can deliver, including popular drives like the Samsung 990 Pro.
Those speeds matter most for people who regularly move huge files, render video, work with large assets, or want a very fast drive for a future proof PCIe 5.0 gaming PC. For normal game loading, the difference between a good PCIe 4.0 SSD and a PCIe 5.0 SSD may not always feel dramatic, but heavy file transfers and professional workloads can benefit more.

The main downside is heat. PCIe 5.0 SSDs can run hot under heavy workloads, and the SN8100 is no exception. Anyone buying it should make sure their motherboard has a proper M.2 heatsink, or choose a setup with enough cooling to prevent throttling.
The drive is backward compatible with PCIe 4.0 slots, but it will not hit its full 14,900MB/s speed there. To get the full benefit, you need a PCIe 5.0 capable motherboard.
