Valorant update turns expensive cheating hardware into a $6,000 problem

Riot Games has pushed a new Vanguard anti cheat update for Valorant that appears to block expensive DMA based cheating setups, leaving some cheaters with hardware that no longer works properly with the game. The company then mocked the affected players on social media, saying they now owned a “$6k paperweight.”

The update targets Direct Memory Access cheating devices, which are used to read and manipulate game data from outside the main gaming system. Some reports described the update as “bricking” the hardware, but that wording appears to be too strong. The devices are not permanently destroyed. Players have reported that reinstalling the operating system can make the hardware usable again, but installing Valorant and Vanguard again may trigger the same problem.

For many Valorant players, this is a satisfying result. Competitive shooters depend heavily on trust, and cheating can ruin the experience for everyone else in a match. A cheat setup costing thousands of dollars shows how far some players are willing to go for an unfair advantage in a free to play game.

At the same time, the update has restarted an old debate about kernel level anti cheat software. Vanguard runs with deep system access, which is why some players worry about privacy, security risks, and possible misuse. Supporters argue that games like Valorant need strong anti cheat tools because modern cheat makers use advanced hardware based methods.
