Unreal Engine 5.8 is shaping up to be an important update for game performance, especially on handheld systems like Nintendo Switch 2. Epic is testing a new medium quality Lumen mode that targets 60FPS on handheld consoles while keeping global illumination active.
That matters because Lumen has been one of Unreal Engine 5’s most demanding features. It helps create more realistic lighting, but many lower power systems struggle to run it well. Switch 2 and PC handhelds need lighter options if developers want better visuals without sacrificing frame rate.
The new Lumen Medium Quality mode uses Irradiance Fields with Probe Occlusion. Epic says this path is twice as fast as high quality Lumen, which targets 60FPS on PlayStation 5. The medium mode is now planned as the default path for current generation handheld consoles and is also supported on PC.

This could be a major step for Switch 2. Unreal Engine 5 games on Nintendo hardware often need large cutbacks, and many ports cannot use every major UE5 feature at once. A lighter Lumen path could help developers keep better lighting while staying closer to smooth performance targets.
It also helps PC handhelds. Devices like Steam Deck style systems, ROG Ally class handhelds, and future portable gaming PCs all benefit when engines scale better. Developers can tune one lighter Lumen path for handheld hardware instead of turning off advanced lighting completely.

MegaLights is another important part of Unreal Engine 5.8. It is moving into production ready status, which means developers should be able to use it more confidently in real games. Epic says it is designed to provide faster, cleaner, and more scalable lighting workflows across current consoles and handhelds.
The update also includes tools for bigger worlds and better content creation. Mesh Terrain is an experimental system for building massive 3D mesh based environments. Procedural Content Generation is getting improvements that allow manual edits while keeping procedural logic intact. The Procedural Vegetation Editor is also being improved for creating high quality Nanite ready vegetation inside Unreal Editor.
The MetaHuman Crowd Plugin could help studios fill worlds with more believable crowds. It can scale from small groups to thousands of characters and can turn compatible human meshes into MetaHumans with head and body conforming.
Unreal Engine 5.8 is still in preview, so developers will need time to test these features in real projects. Epic has not confirmed the final stable release date yet.
Still, the direction is clear. Epic knows Unreal Engine 5 needs to run better on more hardware, not only high end PCs and consoles. If the new Lumen mode works well in shipping games, Switch 2 and handheld PC ports could look better and run smoother without losing the lighting features that make UE5 games stand out.
