Tomb Raider: Catalyst May Arrive in 2028 as Amazon Expands Its Luna Strategy

Tomb Raider: Catalyst may now be planned for 2028, although Amazon has stopped short of confirming an official change to the game’s release schedule.

Amazon Gaming head Jeff Gattis referred to a 2028 launch while discussing the company’s upcoming projects and its wider plans for the Luna cloud gaming service. However, Amazon later said it had no new timing information to share and that development was progressing well.

The mixed messaging leaves the release window uncertain. Catalyst was originally expected to follow Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, which is currently scheduled for February 12, 2027. A later launch for Catalyst would give the two games more space and allow their developers to focus on separate production schedules.

Amazon’s comments create uncertainty around the release date

Catalyst was announced alongside Legacy of Atlantis at The Game Awards 2025. At the time, Legacy of Atlantis was expected in 2026, while Catalyst was positioned as the later project.

When Legacy of Atlantis moved to early 2027, a delay for Catalyst appeared increasingly likely. Gattis later described the company’s schedule as Legacy of Atlantis launching first, followed by Catalyst in 2028.

Amazon’s subsequent statement did not directly confirm or deny that timeline. The publisher said it had nothing new to announce about Catalyst’s release and that the game was progressing well.

That response suggests 2028 may be an internal target rather than a formally approved public release window. Development schedules for large games can also change well before launch, especially when several studios and publishing teams are involved.

Catalyst is expected to continue Lara Croft’s main series adventures, while Legacy of Atlantis revisits her original story through a modern remake. Separating the projects by roughly a year could prevent them from competing for attention and give each title a clearer marketing period.

Luna is becoming central to Amazon’s gaming plans

Gattis also outlined Amazon’s ambitions for Luna, the company’s cloud gaming service. Prime members using compatible Fire TV hardware in the United States and United Kingdom can now access selected Luna games through the Prime Video application.

The available catalogue includes major releases such as Hogwarts Legacy, EA Sports FC 26 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The service is designed to let you play without purchasing a traditional console or building a gaming PC.

Amazon does not currently describe Luna as a direct replacement for dedicated hardware. Its immediate goal is to reach people who may not own a console or suitable computer.

However, rising hardware prices could make cloud services more attractive. Gattis pointed to the increasing cost of gaming machines and concerns about memory and component shortages. If future consoles and PCs become substantially more expensive, Luna could offer a lower entry cost for people with reliable internet connections.

Cloud gaming still has important limitations. Performance depends on connection quality, latency and data availability. Image compression can also reduce visual quality compared with running a game locally. Ownership is another concern because access depends on subscriptions, licensing agreements and continued service support.

Original games will help Amazon give Luna a clearer identity

Amazon wants Luna to become associated with recognisable franchises rather than operating only as a streaming platform for games available elsewhere.

Tomb Raider is expected to play an important role in that strategy. Amazon also controls several entertainment properties through its wider film and television business, giving it opportunities to connect games with Prime Video series, films and merchandise.

Gattis said original content would be necessary for Luna to build a stronger identity. The company is considering additional large projects based on properties owned by Amazon and MGM, although many remain in early discussions.

This does not necessarily mean every Amazon published game will become exclusive to Luna. The company can still release titles on traditional platforms while using them to strengthen its cloud service.

For now, Tomb Raider: Catalyst remains in development without a firmly confirmed launch date. The reference to 2028 provides the clearest indication of Amazon’s current plans, but the publisher’s later response means the timing should remain provisional until a formal announcement is made.
