The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past Will Be Revealed on August 25 as Switch 2 Questions Grow

CD Projekt Red will show the first footage from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt expansion Songs of the Past during Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, 2026. The presentation will give players an early look at the new adventure before its planned release in 2027.

The expansion was confirmed in May after months of reports and speculation. CD Projekt Red is developing the project with support from Fool’s Theory, the studio currently working on the remake of the original Witcher game.

Opening Night Live begins at 11am PT, 2pm ET and 8pm CEST. The presentation is expected to cover the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions of Songs of the Past.

Songs of the Past could become Geralt’s final major adventure

Songs of the Past is expected to be a large expansion rather than a small content update. Its reported scale has already led to comparisons with The Witcher 3 expansions Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, as well as Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

The story may also carry additional importance because it could be Geralt of Rivia’s final major adventure before the series shifts its attention to Ciri. CD Projekt Red has already confirmed that Ciri will be the main character in The Witcher 4, which is being developed as the beginning of a new Witcher saga.

Few official story details have been shared so far. The August presentation should provide a clearer idea of the setting, characters and central conflict. It may also confirm whether the expansion introduces a completely new region or returns to familiar locations from the main game.

The Witcher 3 originally launched in 2015 and later received updated versions for newer consoles and PC. Its two major expansions helped extend the game’s life, with Blood and Wine adding a large new region and a lengthy standalone story. Songs of the Past will arrive more than a decade after the original release, making it an unusual return to an established single player game.

Switch 2 owners are still waiting for confirmation

The platform list has become one of the main points of discussion following the reveal announcement. CD Projekt Red has confirmed PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC details for the August presentation, but it has not announced a Nintendo Switch 2 version.

Some players believe the newer Nintendo system should be capable of running an improved version of The Witcher 3. That expectation has grown after Cyberpunk 2077 received a Switch 2 release that demonstrated stronger performance than many expected from the hardware.

The original Witcher 3 was released on the first Nintendo Switch, although it required substantial visual reductions to operate on the older system. A native Switch 2 edition could potentially offer higher resolution, improved frame rates and better image quality.

For now, there is no confirmation that Songs of the Past or an updated version of The Witcher 3 is coming to Switch 2. The Gamescom presentation would provide a suitable opportunity for CD Projekt Red to announce another platform, but players should treat that possibility as speculation until the company makes an official statement.

The August 25 reveal should answer several important questions about the expansion. Players are waiting to see how large the new content will be, where the story takes place and whether Geralt’s return will connect directly to The Witcher 4. Platform support will also remain closely watched, especially by Switch 2 owners hoping to revisit the Continent on Nintendo’s newer hardware.
