Sword Sage: Awakening is a new third person action RPG that combines Chinese mythology, fantasy creatures, science fiction elements, and demanding sword combat. Publisher 4Divinity has released a new story and gameplay trailer for the game, offering the clearest look yet at its world, its main character, and the fast paced battles players can expect.
The game follows San Niang, a warrior trying to correct a mistake that changed the balance of her world. Set in the fantasy land of Jiannandao, the story begins with an incident from years earlier that gave humanity access to extraordinary knowledge and power. That gain came with serious consequences, bringing monsters and mythical beings into the world.
Sword Panda Limited is developing the project, which will be the studio’s first game since it was founded in 2022. There is no release date yet, but the game has been confirmed for PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
San Niang’s Journey Begins After an Old Mistake Changes the World
The new trailer places San Niang at the centre of the story. She appears to be carrying the responsibility for a past error that disrupted the natural order and opened the door to a growing supernatural threat.
That setup gives Sword Sage: Awakening a clear personal focus. Rather than simply placing a warrior into a world full of enemies, the game appears to connect the central conflict directly to San Niang’s past.
The trailer also shows a world shaped by traditional Chinese imagery, including mountains, temples, ornate armour, mystical landscapes, and large creatures. At the same time, some visual details suggest that the game will mix folklore with futuristic technology and science fiction ideas.

The Combat Trailer Shows Dodges, Parries and Sword Focused Battles
The gameplay footage suggests that timing will be an important part of combat. San Niang uses a sword against enemies in close range, while the trailer highlights quick dodges, defensive moves, and parries.
This may remind some players of Soulslike games, but the footage alone does not confirm that Sword Sage: Awakening will use the same structure. It could also be closer to a more traditional action game with a stronger focus on fluid combat and cinematic encounters.

The distinction will matter once the developer reveals more. A game can include difficult bosses and precise parry mechanics without using the full Soulslike formula. Details about checkpoints, character progression, difficulty options, exploration, and equipment systems have not been shared yet.
The trailer does suggest that the studio wants combat to feel intense and visually dramatic. San Niang’s weapon effects, enemy designs, and fast movement all point toward an action focused experience.
The Game Has Time to Define Its Identity
Sword Sage: Awakening is entering a crowded action RPG market, where strong combat alone may not be enough to stand out. Its mythology based setting could give it a distinct identity, especially if the developer uses Chinese folklore in ways that feel central to the story rather than simply decorative.
The lack of a release window may be a sensible choice for now. It gives Sword Panda Limited time to show more of the game before setting expectations around a launch date.
For now, Sword Sage: Awakening looks like an ambitious first project with an interesting world and a promising combat direction. The next gameplay reveal will likely be important in showing how deeply the game develops its story, its systems, and its unique mix of mythology and science fiction.
