Valve has released SteamOS 3.8.25 Beta with early support for the Steam Frame Wireless Adapter, new Steam Machine firmware, broader handheld compatibility and several fixes for HDMI, Wi Fi, charging indicators and controller support.
The update also moves SteamOS to Linux kernel 6.18.42 and improves compatibility with third party devices including the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+, KONKR FIT, AYANEO Pocket S2 and OneXPlayer Apex.
One of the most notable additions is preliminary support for the Steam Frame Wireless Adapter, suggesting Valve is continuing to prepare its software ecosystem for the upcoming hardware.

Steam Frame support appears for the first time
SteamOS 3.8.25 introduces preliminary software support for the Steam Frame Wireless Adapter.
Valve has not provided a release date through this update, so the addition should not be treated as confirmation that the device will launch immediately.
It does show that operating system support is being prepared in advance.
Similar early integration has previously appeared ahead of other Valve hardware, making the addition worth watching as Steam Frame development continues.
The update itself does not provide further details about the adapter’s capabilities or how it will interact with Steam Frame hardware.
Steam Machine firmware fixes sleep problems
Steam Machine Firmware 108 is also included.
The firmware corrects an issue that could cause the system to wake again immediately after entering sleep mode.
Valve has also fixed a rarer problem where CPU performance could remain reduced after waking from sleep until the system was rebooted.
That second issue was potentially more disruptive because a system could appear to resume normally while delivering lower performance during games or other demanding workloads.
The firmware should allow affected Steam Machine systems to return from sleep without requiring a restart to restore normal processor performance.
HDMI audio and display behavior improve
Several changes focus on external displays and televisions.
Valve has fixed HDMI audio dropouts that occurred with certain combinations of games and TVs.
HDMI hot plug detection has also been made more reliable.
Another fix addresses Desktop Mode lockups that could occur when connecting or disconnecting an HDMI display.

SteamOS now also handles televisions with an HDMI Game Mode more cleanly during boot. Previously, the initial boot logo could appear before the TV entered Game Mode, causing extra delay and visible flashing.
These changes should improve the experience for handheld systems connected to docks, monitors and TVs.
More third party handhelds receive support
Valve continues expanding SteamOS compatibility beyond its own hardware.
Initial gamepad support has been added for the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+, KONKR FIT and AYANEO Pocket S2.
OneXPlayer Apex support has also been updated for newer firmware.
Valve additionally says compatibility has improved for other MSI Claw and OneXPlayer variants, although specific models were not listed.
Devices using external Wi Fi adapters or no Wi Fi adapter at all should also behave more reliably.
A separate input fix addresses a rare problem where controls on some third party handhelds could stop responding when held down.
Original Steam Controller gains wake functionality
The 2015 Steam Controller Wireless Adapter can now wake compatible systems from sleep.
Valve has also added the 2026 Steam Controller to the built in hid_steam driver.
That change allows native controller applications to recognize and use the newer controller even when the Steam client itself is not running.
Battery information has also been improved for situations where a device is plugged in but consuming more power than the connected charger can supply.
That should make it clearer when a handheld is technically charging but still losing battery because the power adapter is insufficient.
Beta currently has a known performance issue
Valve is warning about one important problem in SteamOS 3.8.25 Beta.
Performance can degrade in some situations where composition is required, including configurations using FSR.
The issue has already been fixed in SteamOS 3.8.16 Stable, but that correction has not yet reached the beta branch.
Anyone affected may therefore get better performance by temporarily switching back to the Stable channel.
SteamOS 3.8.25 Beta is a broad maintenance release rather than a single feature update. The early Steam Frame support is the most interesting addition, while the Steam Machine firmware, HDMI fixes, new controller support and wider handheld compatibility should provide more immediate benefits across Valve and third party hardware.
