Square Enix is treating Final Fantasy VII Revelation as the final chapter of the remake trilogy, but producer Yoshinori Kitase has suggested that the wider Final Fantasy VII story may not necessarily end there.
The development team is currently focused on finishing Revelation, which is planned as the conclusion to the remake project. However, Kitase said the long term response from fans could influence what happens next.
That possibility comes at a time when Square Enix has not revealed Final Fantasy XVII, leaving the future direction of the main series unclear.
| Detail | Current status |
|---|---|

| Final Fantasy XVII | Not officially revealed |

Fan interest could extend Final Fantasy VII again
Kitase pointed to the history of the original Final Fantasy VII as an example of how fan demand can shape future projects.
After the original game was completed, the development team initially believed the story was finished.
The lasting popularity of characters such as Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret and Sephiroth eventually led to several additional projects, including Crisis Core and other entries connected to the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII.
The remake trilogy followed years later.
Kitase suggested that a similar situation could happen after Revelation if fans continue to respond strongly to the characters and world.
For now, however, Square Enix is treating Revelation as the endpoint of the remake trilogy rather than announcing another sequel or spin off.
Revelation is carrying more weight than earlier remake games
Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launched while the broader franchise was still moving forward with other major projects.
Final Fantasy XVI arrived during the remake trilogy and gave the series a completely different setting, cast and gameplay direction.
Revelation is arriving under different circumstances.
There is currently no announced Final Fantasy XVII, and Square Enix has provided little information about the next numbered entry.

That leaves Revelation as one of the most important Final Fantasy projects currently known.
The game is expected to expand the remake series with a larger world, refined combat and additional character customization.
Cid and Vincent are also expected to play larger roles in the final entry.
Final Fantasy XVII remains unclear
The absence of information about Final Fantasy XVII has created uncertainty about what Square Enix plans to do after Revelation.
There has been no confirmed announcement about its development team, gameplay direction, setting or release window.
That silence leaves several possibilities open.
Square Enix could already be working on the next numbered game without being ready to reveal it, or the company may still be deciding how to approach the franchise after recent releases.
There is also no confirmation that the team behind Final Fantasy VII Revelation would work on Final Fantasy XVII.
Any connection between the two remains speculation.
Square Enix has several directions available
The company now has multiple approaches it could follow.
It could continue creating completely new numbered Final Fantasy games while occasionally returning to older entries through remakes and spin offs.
It could also expand Final Fantasy VII further if Revelation performs strongly and demand remains high.
Another path is represented by Final Fantasy Resonance, which returns to traditional turn based combat while using modern presentation.
If that project performs well, Square Enix may have more reason to support both modern action focused games and traditional turn based Final Fantasy titles.
That would give the company more flexibility instead of relying on one gameplay style.
Revelation may end the trilogy without ending Final Fantasy VII
At the moment, the clearest message is that Final Fantasy VII Revelation is being developed as the final installment of the remake trilogy.
There is no confirmed fourth game or direct continuation.
However, Kitase’s comments indicate that Square Enix is not ruling out future projects involving the same characters and setting.
The original Final Fantasy VII followed a similar path, with later projects emerging because the game remained popular long after its release.
Whether that happens again will likely depend on how players respond to Revelation and how Square Enix decides to balance new Final Fantasy worlds with the continued popularity of Final Fantasy VII.
