Samsung Freestyle+ Projector Uses AI to Avoid Obstacles and Create a 100 Inch Picture

Samsung has introduced the Freestyle+, a portable 1080p projector designed to make setup easier through automatic image correction and obstacle detection.

The compact DLP projector can create an image measuring up to 100 inches. It delivers up to 430 ISO lumens of brightness and supports HDR10+, built in streaming services, cloud gaming and 360 degree audio.

Samsung has priced the Freestyle+ at $1,199.99. That makes it considerably more expensive than several portable projectors with higher claimed brightness levels. Its main appeal comes from the automated setup tools rather than raw image specifications.

The projector can be connected to a wall outlet or powered through a compatible external battery. This allows it to be used in different rooms or carried outdoors, although image quality will still depend heavily on the surrounding light.

AI tools adjust the picture around walls and objects

The Freestyle+ includes a 3D Auto Keystone feature that corrects the shape of the projected image when the device is placed at an angle. This is useful when the projector cannot sit directly in front of the viewing surface.

Wall Calibration can adjust colour and brightness based on the surface being used. A white screen should still provide the most predictable result, but the feature is designed to improve visibility on coloured or patterned walls.

The projector can also detect objects that interrupt the projection area. Its Obstacle Avoidance function does not project through or around an object. Instead, it identifies the blocked section and moves or resizes the image to use the available wall space.

These tools are intended to create a simple setup process. You can point the projector at a suitable surface and allow it to handle much of the alignment automatically.

Their effectiveness will depend on the room. A crowded wall may force the projector to create a smaller image, while uneven surfaces could still affect sharpness even after digital correction.

Brightness may limit daytime viewing

The Freestyle+ reaches up to 430 ISO lumens. That should be sufficient for evening viewing or a dark room, but it is modest for a projector costing around $1,200.

Large projected images require more light to maintain strong contrast and colour. A 100 inch picture may therefore look washed out in a bright room, especially during daytime use.

For the best results, owners will likely need to reduce ambient light or use a proper projection screen. Outdoor use will also be more practical after sunset rather than during the day.

Samsung supports HDR10+, but the projector’s limited brightness means it may not reproduce the same HDR impact as a bright television. The format can still help with tone mapping and detail, but expectations should remain realistic.

Built in software reduces the need for extra devices

The projector includes Samsung’s smart platform, giving you access to supported streaming applications without connecting a separate media player.

Cloud gaming support also allows compatible games to run through an internet connection. The experience will depend on network speed, wireless stability and service availability in your region.

The integrated 360 degree speaker system is designed to spread sound around the room. It may be sufficient for casual viewing, though an external speaker or sound system could provide better bass and clearer dialogue.

The Freestyle+ is available now, with some retailers listing it a few dollars below its recommended price. Its high cost may be difficult to justify if brightness is your main priority. However, the compact design, flexible power options and automatic correction features could make it useful for buyers who value portability and quick setup over maximum image performance.
