PUBG is preparing a major console update that will add two new graphics modes to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in July 2026. The update will let players choose between higher visual quality at 60 FPS or a smoother 120 FPS experience at a lower resolution.
Both Xbox consoles will receive the two options, although the target resolutions differ because of the performance gap between Series X and Series S.
Xbox Series X will support 4K resolution at 60 FPS and 1440p at 120 FPS. Xbox Series S will offer 1440p at 60 FPS and 1080p at 120 FPS.
The same update will also improve loading speeds across the console versions. Additional changes involving hit detection and controls are planned for later updates.
Xbox Series X can run PUBG at 4K and 60 FPS
The new graphics modes give Xbox Series X players a clear choice between resolution and responsiveness.
The 60 FPS option targets 2160p, commonly referred to as 4K. This mode should provide the clearest image, making distant objects, terrain, buildings, and enemies easier to identify.
The 120 FPS mode reduces the resolution to 1440p but provides a much smoother frame rate. This could be especially useful during close combat, aiming, driving, and quick camera movements.
| Console | Quality mode | Performance mode |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | 2160p at 60 FPS | 1440p at 120 FPS |
| Xbox Series S | 1440p at 60 FPS | 1080p at 120 FPS |
| PlayStation 5 | 1800p at 60 FPS | 1440p at 120 FPS |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | 2160p at 60 FPS | 1800p at 120 FPS |
A compatible 120 Hz television or monitor will be required to make full use of the higher frame rate mode. Players using a standard 60 Hz screen can still select the 60 FPS option and benefit from the increased resolution.
Xbox Series S also receives a full 120 FPS option
Xbox Series S will run PUBG at 1080p when the 120 FPS mode is selected. The 60 FPS option increases the resolution to 1440p.
Offering both modes on the less powerful console is a useful improvement. Competitive shooters benefit greatly from stable and responsive performance, and 120 FPS can reduce input delay while making movement appear smoother.
The resolution reduction may be noticeable on a large 4K display, but many players may prefer the faster response during competitive matches. Those who value image quality can use the 1440p and 60 FPS setting instead.
The update also means that 60 FPS will become the minimum target across the new modes. PUBG struggled with unstable performance on older Xbox hardware, particularly during its early years, so the new options represent a major improvement over the game’s original console experience.
Loading times will be improved throughout the console version
The development team is also working on menu and loading speed improvements. The changes will target bottlenecks based on the requirements of each menu rather than applying one general fix across the entire game.
This should make navigation feel more responsive when moving between the lobby, inventory, customization screens, matchmaking, and other areas.
No exact release date has been announced, but the new graphics modes and loading improvements are scheduled to arrive during July 2026.
Players will need to wait for the full update notes to learn whether the patch includes additional performance fixes or technical adjustments beyond the features already confirmed.
Hit detection and controls will receive future changes
PUBG’s console improvements will continue after the July update. Future patches will include adjustments to hit detection, although the development team has not explained exactly how the system will change.

Reliable hit detection is especially important in a competitive battle royale game. Delays or inconsistencies between a player’s actions and the server response can make gunfights feel unpredictable.
A new default control scheme is also being developed. The aim is to create a more intuitive and consistent experience for controller players.
PUBG has received many control changes since its original console release, but the game still has a large number of actions, menus, attachments, and inventory commands. A revised layout could make the game easier for returning players and newcomers.
Existing players may be able to keep their current settings or remap the new layout, although complete details have not yet been provided.
The update strengthens PUBG’s current generation console support
PUBG shifted its attention to Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PlayStation 5 after ending support for older console hardware. That move gave the team more room to improve frame rates, resolutions, loading, and stability without being limited by the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
The July update shows that console development remains an active priority. Both Xbox systems will offer meaningful choices rather than receiving a single fixed configuration.
Xbox Series X owners can select between native 4K style output at 60 FPS and smoother 1440p gameplay at 120 FPS. Xbox Series S owners can choose between 1440p at 60 FPS and 1080p at 120 FPS.
For competitive players with compatible displays, the 120 FPS modes will probably be the most attractive option. Players who prefer a sharper picture can stay with 60 FPS, which remains a strong target for a large multiplayer shooter.
The exact July release date has not been confirmed, but the update should make PUBG considerably smoother and more flexible across both current Xbox consoles.
