SharpEmu has reached a notable early milestone in PlayStation 5 emulation by loading Demon’s Souls far enough to display its character creation screen on PC.
The progress remains far from full gameplay, but reaching this stage shows that the emulator can already process several important parts of the game’s startup sequence. SharpEmu can load the game executable, run native CPU instructions, and handle some kernel related functions, although many critical systems are still incomplete.
Demon’s Souls remains one of the most sought after PlayStation 5 exclusives among PC players. Sony has not announced an official PC version, so emulation may eventually become the only alternative for running the remake outside its original platform.
SharpEmu is also being tested with Dreaming Sarah, Void Terrarium, and Dead Cells. Simpler two dimensional games are likely to become playable before a complex release such as Demon’s Souls, but the remake is receiving considerable attention because of its status as a major console exclusive.

The next major step would be entering the game world, where the emulator must handle far more demanding systems. These include complex graphics rendering, physics, audio, asset streaming, controller input, memory management, and PlayStation 5 specific operating system behaviour.
Any one of these areas can prevent a game from progressing or cause severe visual and performance problems.
Demon’s Souls will be difficult to emulate properly
Demon’s Souls is a technically demanding game built specifically for the PlayStation 5. It uses detailed environments, complex lighting, high quality character models, and fast storage access.
A successful emulator must reproduce the behaviour of the original hardware through software running on a PC. This process creates substantial overhead, even on powerful systems.

Dead Cells is likely to be easier to emulate because it uses two dimensional visuals and has lower hardware demands. Dreaming Sarah and Void Terrarium may also provide useful test cases for basic rendering, audio, input, and game logic.

Earlier emulator projects show how quickly progress can change
PlayStation emulation projects sometimes move from basic menus to partial gameplay faster than expected once key technical problems are solved.
The progress of ShadPS4 with Bloodborne is a useful example. That emulator initially struggled to move beyond startup sequences, but later improvements allowed the game to run in increasingly functional states.

Development speed will depend on contributor activity, documentation, testing, reverse engineering, and the availability of suitable PC hardware.
Full PS5 emulation remains a long term project
SharpEmu is not ready to replace a PlayStation 5.
Important components are still missing, and even games that boot may fail shortly afterward. Stable graphics, accurate audio, reliable saving, controller support, and acceptable performance will require much more work.
Players should also expect high hardware requirements when demanding games eventually become playable. Emulation typically needs a PC considerably more powerful than the original console because it must reproduce console behaviour while also running the host operating system.
There is currently no confirmed timeline for Demon’s Souls to become fully playable.
Legal use depends on owning the required software
Emulators themselves can have legitimate uses, including preservation, research, and running legally obtained software. However, downloading copyrighted games or system files without permission remains unlawful in many regions.
Anyone testing SharpEmu should use game data and firmware obtained from hardware and software they legally own.
The project’s progress is still significant for preservation. Console exclusives can eventually become difficult to access when hardware fails or online services disappear. A mature emulator can help preserve games beyond the commercial life of the original system.
SharpEmu reaching the Demon’s Souls character creator is therefore an encouraging technical achievement, but it should be understood as an early step. The emulator can now move beyond the initial boot process, yet full gameplay, accurate graphics, and stable performance remain major challenges.
