Valve has released the Proton 11.0 2 release candidate for public testing, bringing a large collection of compatibility improvements for Windows games running on SteamOS and Linux.
The test build adds support for eight more games and corrects problems affecting major releases such as Diablo 4, Helldivers 2, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Marvel Rivals and several Forza Horizon games.
Proton acts as a compatibility layer between Windows games and Linux. It is essential to the Steam Deck because it allows many titles developed for Windows to run without requiring a native Linux version.
The 11.0 2 update is not yet the final stable release. Its changelog remains subject to change while testing continues, and some fixes may be adjusted or removed before the finished version becomes available.
| Update area | Main changes |
|---|---|
| Newly playable games | Eight additional titles |
| Major launch fixes | Diablo 4, Helldivers 2, Metal Gear Solid V and Marvel Rivals |
| Forza improvements | Black screen and suspend issues corrected |
| Controller support | More reliable controller reconnection |
| Graphics components | Updated DXVK, VKD3D and DXVK NVAPI |
| Current status | Public release candidate |
Eight more games are now listed as playable
The release candidate adds compatibility for AsteroidsHD, Heroes of the Three Kingdoms 7, Konkan Coast Pirate Solutions, Otherworld Legends, Portal Worlds, SMILE GAME BUILDER, Tetrageddon Games and Warhammer: Dark Omen Classic.
These games previously had problems that prevented them from launching or operating correctly through Proton.
The update also corrects several regressions introduced with the first Proton 11 release. Natural Selection 2 should once again connect to online servers, while Borderlands Game of the Year Enhanced should no longer fail during initialisation.

Crysis 2 Remastered receives a fix for hanging during loading when ray tracing is active. The Coma 3: Bloodlines is also playable again, and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered should now recognise controls correctly in full screen mode on SteamOS.
Resident Evil 2 receives a correction for low resolution full screen modes on higher resolution displays. Homeworld 2 Classic and Shogun: Total War should also behave more reliably when switching away from and returning to the game.
Recent game updates no longer break several major titles
Proton 11.0 2 addresses compatibility problems caused by recent updates to individual games.
Diablo 4, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Helldivers 2 should launch again after being temporarily affected by game side changes. Similar fixes apply to Marvel Rivals, Arc Raiders and the Trove Public Test Server.
Forza Horizon 4, 5 and 6 should no longer display a black screen on recent SteamOS versions. Forza Horizon 6 also receives a fix for closing automatically after the device resumes from sleep.
Path of Exile should stop crashing when certain text appears in chat. Mirror’s Edge Catalyst receives a correction for freezing on systems without NVIDIA graphics hardware, while Dirt 5 should no longer crash on processors that combine different types of CPU cores.
Other fixes cover Dark and Darker startup hangs, War Thunder crashes, Rocket League controller detection and Dragon Quest Builders audio problems after suspend.
Video, sound and rendering problems receive attention
The update includes corrections for a broad range of visual and audio issues.
Portal 2 should produce proper sound on systems using 7.1 channel audio. Star Wars Starfighter and the Psycho Sleuth demo receive video playback fixes, while Legend of Mana should now display its introductory video correctly.
Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster receives a fix for distorted prerendered backgrounds. Call of Duty from 2003 should show the correct colours in its main menu, and Zombie Estate 2 should render its sprites properly.
The release also improves controller hotplug reliability. This should reduce problems when a controller is disconnected and connected again during a game.
Core Proton components have been updated
Proton 11.0 2 includes newer versions of several underlying technologies.
DXVK has been updated to a newer Proton 11 development build, while VKD3D moves to version 2.0. DXVK NVAPI is updated to version 0.9.2, Wine Mono reaches version 11.2.0 and FEX moves to its July 2026 release.
These components handle areas such as DirectX translation, Windows software support and processor compatibility. Updating them can improve performance and correct problems across several games at once.
Steam Deck owners can test the release candidate by opening Proton 11.0 in their Steam library, selecting Properties, opening the Betas section and choosing the release candidate branch.
Because this is a test build, it may introduce new problems. Players who prefer maximum stability should remain on the normal Proton 11 version until Valve completes testing and publishes Proton 11.0 2 as a stable update.
