PNY GeForce RTX 5080 Slim OC Review: Strong 4K Gaming Performance in a Two Slot Design

The PNY GeForce RTX 5080 Slim OC delivers the high-end gaming performance expected from an RTX 5080 while using a rare two slot cooler design. It is a strong option for buyers who want powerful 4K gaming hardware without filling their system with an oversized three slot graphics card.

Most modern partner GPUs have become increasingly large, even when their cooling requirements do not always justify the space they take up. That can make upgrades harder for people using compact cases, mainstream mid tower builds, or systems with limited clearance around expansion slots.

PNY takes a more practical route with the RTX 5080 Slim OC. It avoids RGB lighting, aggressive angles, and oversized shrouds in favour of a clean design that focuses on cooling, compatibility, and performance.

At around $1,299, it carries a small premium over the expected baseline price for an RTX 5080. However, the compact two slot form factor could justify that difference for buyers who need more room inside their PC.

A two slot RTX 5080 that still offers premium performance

The RTX 5080 Slim OC uses the same core hardware as NVIDIA’s RTX 5080 Founders Edition. It has the same 16GB memory capacity, 30Gbps effective memory speed, display outputs, PCIe interface, and feature support.

The main differences are its factory overclock and dimensions.

PNY lists a 2,730MHz boost clock, which is higher than NVIDIA’s standard specifications. In real gaming conditions, graphics cards often boost above their listed numbers depending on temperature, power limits, and workload. That gives this model a useful performance advantage without requiring manual tuning.

The card measures 300mm long and 40mm thick, which keeps it within a standard two slot width. It is taller than the RTX 5080 Founders Edition, so buyers should still check whether their case has enough room near the side panel and PCIe mounting area.

PNY keeps the design simple and clean

The RTX 5080 Slim OC does not follow the usual gamer focused styling seen on many high-end graphics cards. There is no RGB lighting, no large logos, and no dramatic fan shroud design.

Instead, PNY uses a plain black and grey exterior with two 120mm fans and a metal backplate. The cooler has large cutouts that allow air to move through the card, while the shortened PCB leaves much of the card’s length available for heatsink material and heatpipes.

That layout is important. A thin card still needs enough cooling surface to handle a powerful GPU. PNY appears to use the extra height of the card to stretch its cooling hardware without increasing its slot width.

Cooling remains strong despite the slimmer profile

A two slot RTX 5080 could raise concerns about temperature and fan noise, especially when many competing cards use much larger coolers. However, the Slim OC’s cooling design reportedly keeps temperatures under control while remaining quiet.

The large dual fan setup, oversized heatsink, heatpipes, and airflow cutouts all help the card maintain reasonable thermals.

This makes the design more useful for several types of PC builds:

  • Compact gaming PCs with limited expansion slot space
  • Mid tower systems with capture cards or sound cards
  • Workstations that need more PCIe slots available
  • Cleaner builds where large GPUs block cables and airflow
  • Buyers who dislike oversized graphics card designs

The card is slim in slot width, but it is still a large high-end GPU. Its height may make installation awkward in cases with raised sections near the expansion slot screws. A magnetic screwdriver could make fitting the card easier in tight cases.

The understated design will not appeal to everyone

The simple look is one of the card’s strengths, but it may not suit buyers who want RGB effects or a more dramatic gaming PC design.

Many premium graphics cards are built to become the visual centrepiece of a system. The PNY RTX 5080 Slim OC does the opposite. It is designed to blend in and get the job done.

For some builders, that is exactly what they want. A powerful GPU does not need lighting or decorative panels to justify its place in a high-end system.

A practical RTX 5080 for high performance builds

The PNY GeForce RTX 5080 Slim OC offers a useful balance between performance, cooling, and physical compatibility. It provides strong 4K gaming capability, a factory overclock, quiet operation, and a two slot design that remains uncommon in the current high-end GPU market.

The price premium is a downside, and its tall PCB may still cause fitment issues in some cases. But for buyers who want RTX 5080 level performance without installing a massive three slot graphics card, this is one of the more sensible custom designs available.
