Alpha Dog Games has returned to independent ownership following wider restructuring across Microsoft’s gaming business. The studio is best known for developing Mighty DOOM, the mobile spin off that reimagined the series with a more colourful visual style and simplified action.
The company’s return to independence was confirmed through a brief update from its founder stating that the studio is independently owned again. No details were provided about its next project, funding arrangements, staff size, or long term development plans.
The move follows a difficult period for several teams connected to Xbox. Microsoft’s latest gaming reset reportedly affected thousands of employees and led to further changes across studios under Xbox, Bethesda, and ZeniMax.
Alpha Dog Games now joins a growing group of developers that have moved away from Microsoft ownership or regained greater control over their operations.
Alpha Dog Games has experienced several major ownership changes
Alpha Dog Games began as an independent mobile developer and worked on games including Wraithborne and MonstroCity: Rampage. Bethesda acquired the studio in 2019, bringing it into a much larger publishing organisation.
Microsoft then purchased Bethesda’s parent company in 2021. This placed Alpha Dog Games under Microsoft’s gaming division alongside studios such as id Software, Arkane, and Tango Gameworks.
The studio later developed Mighty DOOM, a mobile action game based on the long running shooter franchise. The project used a lighter presentation than the main series while retaining fast combat, weapon upgrades, and familiar enemies.
Microsoft closed Alpha Dog Games in 2024 during a broader round of studio cuts. Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks were also affected by closures announced during the same period.
Alpha Dog’s founders regained control of the company and revived it in 2025. The latest announcement confirms that the developer has now completed its return to independent ownership.
| Event | Year |
|---|---|
| Alpha Dog Games founded as an independent studio | Before 2019 |
| Acquired by Bethesda | 2019 |
| Became part of Microsoft through Bethesda acquisition | 2021 |
| Mighty DOOM released under Microsoft ownership | 2023 |
| Studio closed during wider cuts | 2024 |
| Founders revived the company | 2025 |
| Independent ownership confirmed again | 2026 |
Independence gives the studio greater control over future projects
Operating independently should allow Alpha Dog Games to decide which projects it wants to pursue without requiring approval from a large corporate owner.
The studio could create an original game, return to one of its older properties, or work with publishers through development and funding agreements. It may also continue focusing on mobile games, where the team already has experience.
However, independence creates new challenges. A smaller studio must secure funding, manage publishing relationships, market its games, and support development without the financial backing of a company the size of Microsoft.

Alpha Dog has not said whether it retained any intellectual property from its earlier projects. Mighty DOOM and the wider DOOM franchise remain controlled by their respective owners, meaning the developer is unlikely to continue that game without a new agreement.
The studio’s next release may therefore be an original property or a project made in partnership with another publisher.
The move follows major changes across Xbox studios
Microsoft’s gaming division has been reorganising teams, budgets, and projects as part of a broader strategic reset. Reports have described thousands of job losses across several studios, with Bethesda and ZeniMax teams facing some of the heaviest reductions.
Other developers have also moved toward independence. Double Fine Productions and Compulsion Games have been connected to changes that would separate them from direct Xbox ownership, while several remaining studios continue to face uncertainty.
An independent exit may provide an alternative to complete closure when Microsoft no longer wants to fund a studio directly. Founders or outside investors can sometimes acquire the company, preserve part of the team, and continue operating under a smaller structure.
This option will not be practical for every developer. The outcome depends on ownership rights, project contracts, staffing costs, intellectual property agreements, and access to investment.
Alpha Dog’s next project remains unknown
Alpha Dog Games has not announced what it is developing or when players can expect to see its next title.
Its previous work suggests that the team may continue creating accessible action games designed for mobile devices. The studio could also expand to PC or console development if it secures enough funding and grows its workforce.
The announcement is still encouraging for people who followed the team through Mighty DOOM and its earlier releases. Instead of disappearing after its closure, Alpha Dog Games has returned as a self controlled developer with the freedom to choose its next direction.
Its future now depends on turning that independence into a sustainable business. The studio has regained ownership, but it will need a strong project and reliable financial support to establish a lasting second chapter.
