Marathon’s Vault Breaker Mode Arrives July 21 With a Full PvE Challenge

Marathon will add its first full PvE focused mode on July 21, giving players a way to experience one of the game’s toughest areas without facing the usual threat from rival teams. The new mode, called Vault Breaker, will send solo players, duos, and trios into Cryo Archive for a series of increasingly difficult vault encounters.

Vault Breaker is aimed at people who enjoy Marathon’s movement, atmosphere, and extraction focused tension but want a mode built around fighting AI enemies rather than competing against other players. It will also give Bungie another chance to expand the game’s activities during the second half of Season 2.

Cryo Archive is already known as one of Marathon’s harder maps, so the new mode is not expected to be a simple training space. Players will need to progress through several vaults, survive tougher challenges, and work toward the final encounter with the mysterious entity at the end of the activity.

Vault Breaker Gives Marathon a Different Way to Play

The new mode will support three queue options. You can enter Cryo Archive alone, with one teammate, or in a full three player squad. That flexibility could make Vault Breaker useful for players who prefer solo challenges as well as groups that want a more cooperative experience.

Bungie says the mode will include progression that is unique to Vault Breaker. That suggests players may be able to become stronger across several matches while learning how to deal with the increasingly difficult encounters.

The update is important because Marathon has continued to receive seasonal changes as Bungie works to refine the extraction shooter. A dedicated PvE mode could appeal to players who enjoy the setting but do not always want the pressure that comes with PvP encounters.

The Cradle Will Also Receive a Major Progression Update

The July 21 update will include more than Vault Breaker. Bungie is also adding the Cradle Evolution System, which allows players to reset their Cradle progression after reaching the maximum level.

Resetting the Cradle will grant one additional maximum Energy point and unlock cosmetic rewards, including more Runner shell styles. Bungie is also increasing progression speed within the Cradle, giving players a stronger reason to continue upgrading and restarting the system.

The mid season update is expected to include balance changes, quality of life improvements, and bug fixes as well. Those updates could be just as important as the new PvE mode for players who have been asking for smoother progression and more consistent game systems.

Season 3 Is Scheduled to Begin in September

Bungie has also confirmed that Marathon Season 3 will begin on September 22, 2026. The new season is expected to add another Runner shell, new enemies, encounters, and a reworked version of Perimeter, the game’s starting map.

Vault Breaker gives Season 2 a major new activity at a point when the game needs more reasons for players to return. Its success will depend on how rewarding the progression feels, how varied the encounters are, and whether the mode can provide long term replay value after the first few runs.
