The lead developer behind the open source PS5 Linux project has stepped away from the scene, putting the future of the effort in doubt and likely ending plans to bring full Linux support to the PS5 Pro.
Developer Andy Nguyen said he is stopping all work on PS5 Linux after spending months developing the project, which had already succeeded in getting Ubuntu running on PlayStation 5 hardware.
The project depended on vulnerabilities in Sony's hypervisor layer to bypass restrictions that normally prevent an operating system such as Linux from running freely on the console. Nguyen had also been working toward PS5 Pro support, with a planned release in 2027.
Those plans now appear to be over after what he described as the last remaining hypervisor vulnerability was reported to Sony.
PS5 Linux relied on older firmware and hypervisor bugs
The PS5 Linux project used security flaws in the console's hypervisor to gain the access required to boot Linux.
Once those restrictions were bypassed, open source Mesa graphics drivers were modified to improve hardware support and make Ubuntu usable on the console.
The approach had an important limitation. PS5 owners needed to remain on older firmware because Sony regularly patches security vulnerabilities through system updates.

Nguyen had been working on extending the project to the PS5 Pro, but that effort reportedly depended on another hypervisor vulnerability.
He said another group independently discovered the same issue and reported it to Sony.
If Sony patches the vulnerability, current PS5 Pro systems running newer firmware would no longer be able to use it as an entry point for the Linux project.
Developer criticizes changes in the PS5 research community
Nguyen's decision was not based only on the technical setback.
In his public statement, he also criticized what he sees as a decline in the quality of the PS5 security research community.
He said the scene had previously included highly skilled researchers, but claimed that it has increasingly become populated by inexperienced developers relying on large language models and code they do not fully understand.
That criticism reflects Nguyen's own view of the current community rather than an independently established assessment.
His frustration appears to have increased after the hypervisor vulnerability was reported to Sony despite his request that the researchers wait.
According to Nguyen, he had asked them to delay disclosure until after the release of GTA 6 so that people could continue using the vulnerability for Linux experimentation while also legally buying and playing the game on their consoles.
He said the group initially agreed, but reported the issue shortly afterward.
PS5 Pro Linux support may now be finished
The most immediate consequence is the likely end of Nguyen's planned PS5 Pro Linux work.
Because the project relied on a limited number of exploitable hypervisor bugs, losing what he described as the final remaining vulnerability creates a major obstacle.
Sony has not publicly confirmed how or when it will patch the issue, but responsible vulnerability reports commonly lead to security updates if the flaw can be reproduced.

Existing PS5 consoles on older firmware may still be able to use previously known exploits, depending on the exact software version installed.
That means the current PS5 Linux work does not necessarily disappear completely. Existing code and documentation can remain available through the open source project, and other developers could potentially continue development.
However, Nguyen's departure removes the person who had been leading much of the work and planning the PS5 Pro expansion.
For now, the PS5 Linux project remains available as an example of how far the console's hardware can be pushed beyond its intended software environment. Its future development, particularly on newer firmware and PS5 Pro hardware, is much less certain after the loss of both its lead developer and a key vulnerability.
