Kojima's Physint Moves to Xbox After Sony Ends Partnership

Hideo Kojima's upcoming action espionage game Physint has found a new home at Xbox after Sony ended its involvement with the project.

Sony confirmed that it had decided to step away from its collaboration with Kojima Productions. The decision reportedly came as a surprise to Kojima, who said it then took around three months of discussions and negotiations to secure another publishing partner.

That partner is Microsoft, making Physint the second major Kojima Productions project currently associated with Xbox after the horror game OD.

Physint is now an Xbox backed project

Physint was originally announced as a PlayStation project in 2024 and was positioned as Kojima's return to the action espionage genre that made him widely known through Metal Gear Solid.

The change in publisher means the game will now be developed under a new partnership between Kojima Productions and Xbox.

Xbox said it was pleased that Kojima had chosen the company to support Physint, describing the project as part of a broader creative partnership.

The reason Sony ended its involvement has not been disclosed. Any explanation beyond the companies' public statements remains speculative.

Kojima says Sony's decision was unexpected

Kojima indicated that PlayStation's decision to end the collaboration was not something he had anticipated.

According to his account, the search for a replacement partner lasted roughly three months and included discussions, advice and negotiations before an agreement with Xbox was reached.

That suggests development plans had to be reorganized after Sony's exit, although the extent of any changes to the game itself remains unclear.

There is currently no indication that the project's core action espionage concept has been abandoned.

Xbox now has two Kojima Productions games

Physint joins OD as the second game Kojima Productions is developing with Microsoft.

OD is a horror focused project that has already been in development for some time, with filmmaker Jordan Peele involved in its writing.

The addition of Physint significantly expands the relationship between Kojima Productions and Xbox. The two projects also cover very different genres, with OD centered on horror while Physint is intended to return Kojima to action espionage.

Neither game currently has a confirmed release date.

Partnership extends beyond games

The new agreement also appears to include plans beyond traditional game development.

As with the original arrangement involving Sony, Kojima Productions and Microsoft intend to explore film and television adaptations connected to Kojima's projects.

That means Xbox is not simply taking over publishing responsibilities for Physint. Microsoft is also positioned to support broader entertainment projects tied to Kojima Productions.

Specific movie or television productions have not yet been detailed.

For now, the main confirmed change is that Physint has survived Sony's departure and will continue under Xbox. With OD already in development, Kojima Productions now has two separate projects backed by Microsoft, although both still remain without firm release dates.
