Intel is reportedly preparing a new Raptor Lake based desktop processor that could replace the Core i5 14600K with a higher core count while keeping the same 125W power rating.
According to a new leak, the upcoming chip will use eight Performance cores and eight Efficient cores, giving it a total of 16 cores and 24 threads. The existing Core i5 14600K uses six Performance cores and eight Efficient cores for a total of 14 cores and 20 threads.
The new processor is expected to be part of Intel's rumored Raptor Lake Next family and could arrive under the Core 200 branding rather than the Core Ultra name.
Intel has not officially announced the processor or confirmed its specifications, so the information should still be treated as unconfirmed.
Two more Performance cores would be the main upgrade
The biggest difference compared with the Core i5 14600K would be the addition of two Performance cores.
That would increase the number of high performance cores from six to eight while leaving the Efficient core count unchanged at eight.

An eight Performance core configuration is currently associated with higher tier Raptor Lake desktop processors such as the Core i7 14700K, although that chip also contains more Efficient cores.
Moving eight Performance cores into a Core 5 class product would therefore give the new model a more capable CPU configuration without necessarily moving it into Intel's higher end product tier.
The chip may still use existing Raptor Lake silicon
Raptor Lake Next is reportedly based on existing Raptor Lake technology rather than the separate Bartlett Lake family.
Earlier information about the lineup suggested that Intel is preparing several desktop configurations with both 125W and 65W power limits, along with mobile HX variants.
A Core 5 model with eight Performance cores and eight Efficient cores had already appeared in previous leaks, but its intended position in Intel's lineup was unclear at the time.
The latest claim now links that configuration directly to the Core i5 14600K replacement role.
That suggests Intel may be extending the commercial life of its LGA 1700 platform with refreshed products that use familiar silicon while adjusting core configurations and branding.
Raptor Lake Next could coexist with 14th Gen CPUs
The rumored lineup is not expected to replace every existing 14th Gen Core processor immediately.
Instead, Raptor Lake Next is said to coexist with current Raptor Lake Refresh products, giving Intel another set of processors for the LGA 1700 socket.

That would allow motherboard owners to remain on the existing platform while gaining access to newer CPU options without moving to a different socket.
Previous information points to an early 2027 launch, although Intel has not confirmed a release window.
The processors are also expected to appear under the Core 200 series branding. The important distinction is the absence of the Ultra label, separating these chips from Intel's newer Core Ultra product families.
Final clocks and pricing remain unknown
The leak provides no confirmed information about clock speeds, cache configuration, pricing, or integrated graphics.
Those details will determine how meaningful the upgrade is compared with the Core i5 14600K.
Adding two Performance cores should improve heavily threaded workloads if frequencies and power limits remain competitive, but actual performance will depend on final tuning.
It is also unclear whether Intel will keep pricing close to the 14600K or position the new model differently.
For now, the main reported change is straightforward. Intel may replace the 14 core Core i5 14600K with a 16 core Raptor Lake Next processor using an 8P plus 8E design and a 125W power rating.
If the leak is accurate, it would give the long running LGA 1700 platform another significant desktop CPU option in 2027.
