Intel may be preparing Nova Lake chips with only E cores and a stronger integrated GPU

Intel is reportedly working on a new Nova Lake CPU variant for edge computing, and the most interesting part is its unusual design. Instead of using a mix of performance cores and efficiency cores, this chip is said to use only 8 E cores, paired with a much stronger integrated GPU based on 12 Xe3P cores.

Edge systems often need efficient computing, compact designs, and capable graphics or AI acceleration without relying on a separate GPU.

The leaked configuration includes 8 E cores based on Intel’s Arctic Wolf architecture and 12 Xe3P integrated GPU cores. That makes it very different from standard desktop Nova Lake chips, which are expected to use a more traditional CPU layout and weaker integrated graphics in many models.

The integrated GPU is the part that makes the rumor notable. Intel’s standard Nova Lake desktop chips are expected to include only 2 Xe3 graphics cores in some versions, while this edge variant reportedly jumps to 12 Xe3P cores. That would give it far stronger graphics capability and could make it useful for compact machines that need display output, light graphics work, media processing, or edge AI workloads.

The report also connects this to another rumored Nova Lake variant for desktops, which may include 4 P cores, 12 E cores, and the same 12 Xe3P graphics configuration. That desktop model is reportedly aimed more directly at AMD’s Ryzen APUs, which have become stronger because of their integrated Radeon graphics.

For edge platforms, the all E core design makes some sense. Intel may be focusing on efficiency, thermals, and compact deployment rather than maximum single thread performance. Edge systems are often used in embedded devices, industrial computers, retail systems, automation hardware, smart infrastructure, and small local servers. In those cases, strong integrated graphics and efficient CPU cores can matter more than high end desktop performance.

The leaker also reportedly said this edge version will use BGA packaging, meaning it will be soldered directly to the motherboard rather than placed in a replaceable socket. That is common for embedded and edge hardware, where systems are usually built as fixed platforms.

The broader Nova Lake family appears to be getting large and varied. Reports have mentioned single compute tile models with up to 28 cores, dual compute tile designs with up to 52 cores, large cache bLLC versions, chips with up to 12 Xe3P graphics cores, and now E core only designs.

That variety suggests Intel may be planning Nova Lake as more than a normal desktop refresh. It could become a wide platform covering desktops, entry level Xeons, edge systems, and possibly APU style products aimed at AMD.

The timing is also important. Nova Lake is expected later this year, and Intel may show the first teaser around Computex. If that happens, we may get a clearer idea of which versions are real and how Intel plans to position them.

For now, this remains a rumor. But if accurate, Intel’s 8 E core and 12 Xe3P Nova Lake chip could be one of the more interesting edge focused designs in the lineup. It would show Intel trying to combine efficient CPU cores with stronger integrated graphics in areas where a separate GPU is not practical.
