The only answer seems to be a complete reformat because there is no facility to uninstall this intrusive search engine. I detest being told to use something I don’t want on a machine that I own. with an empty hard drive I can install whatever I like. It is not surprising that Bill Gates feels he can dictate to the world but it is galling.

The tutorial doesn’t address the issue I am having. The Search Charm does not return any results for “files.” All I get is “No results for files.” I have contacted, Dell Technical Support, Windows Support, and Microsoft Support. Each refers me to another. Very frustrating, and not able to search for documents on my computer using the Search Charm.

It’s a pity that searching from Windows 8.1 automatically uses Bing. Of course Microsoft is anxious to promote Bing, but ramming it down our throats doesn’t win customers. Yes, you can switch off automatically using Bing (a hassle, which many users won’t know how to do) but there doesn’t seem to be an option to swap Bing for Google or another search engine when searching directly from Windows. If there is, Microsoft is keeping it well hidden! Basically Windows is a good user friendly operating system, despite its detractors. But Microsoft are very soon going to lose customer loyalty if they continue with this sort of practice. DON’T BE EVIL !!!
