Halo’s next multiplayer project may be moving away from its earlier extraction shooter concept and toward a large scale team based mode inspired by Halo 5: Guardians’ Warzone. The game is reportedly known internally as Project Ekur, though Halo Studios has not announced it or confirmed any details.
The latest rumor suggests Ekur began as a prototype following the cancellation of an earlier Halo battle royale project. During its early development, the team reportedly explored whether Halo assets and gameplay systems could be moved into Unreal Engine 5 while still feeling like a proper Halo game.
An extraction shooter idea was reportedly tested during that stage. However, the project is now said to have shifted toward a larger multiplayer format where teams explore a broad map, collect resources, fight AI enemies, and face other player squads.
That would make it closer to a modern version of Halo 5’s Warzone mode than a traditional extraction shooter.
Project Ekur Could Combine PvP, AI Enemies and Large Maps
The rumored gameplay structure sounds like a bigger version of Big Team Battle. Players would enter a large map with a squad, search for resources, battle AI controlled enemies, and fight competing teams across the same environment.
Some extraction style mechanics may still remain. However, the focus appears to be more on large team battles and map control rather than the high risk gameplay commonly associated with dedicated extraction shooters.
This approach could give Halo Studios a way to expand multiplayer without abandoning the core ideas that have helped define the franchise for years. Halo has always worked well when players are given vehicles, open spaces, varied weapons, and multiple ways to approach a fight.

The Project May Have Started as an Unreal Engine Test
