Halo: Campaign Evolved Mod Brings Back Multiplayer With 19 Classic Maps and 16 Player Support

Halo: Campaign Evolved launched without traditional multiplayer, but the community has already stepped in with a project designed to bring the missing experience back.

A new mod called Mjolnir Core adds multiplayer support to Halo: Campaign Evolved, including 19 classic maps and support for matches with up to 16 players.

The project is still in alpha, but it already includes well known Halo maps such as Blood Gulch, Battle Creek and Hang ‘Em High.

Mjolnir Core Restores Classic Halo Multiplayer

Mjolnir Core is a community project built specifically to add multiplayer functionality to Halo: Campaign Evolved.

The mod originally supported only four players, but development has expanded that limit to 16.

It currently includes 19 maps drawn from classic Halo multiplayer.

The current setup process is relatively simple. Players install the launcher, add the multiplayer component and can then begin setting up matches.

However, there does not appear to be a public server browser yet.

That means players currently need to invite friends through their fireteam rather than browse a public list of available matches.

Halo Community Continues Expanding the Game

Mjolnir Core is not the only major community effort surrounding Halo.

Another project, Project Reclaimer, has been expanding Halo 3 on PC with features including a custom server browser, mod support and a larger gameplay sandbox.

That project can support matches with as many as 128 players.

Community developers have also been experimenting with Firefight inside Halo: Campaign Evolved.

Those early Firefight tests have reportedly produced mixed results, but they show how quickly modders have begun adding functionality that was not included with the original release.

Official development is also continuing.

The remaining Halo development team is reportedly working to add Theater and Firefight to Campaign Evolved in December.

Campaign Evolved Launched Without Traditional Multiplayer

The absence of multiplayer has been one of the most noticeable limitations of Halo: Campaign Evolved.

Halo has historically been strongly associated with multiplayer, so releasing Campaign Evolved without a traditional competitive mode left a significant part of the usual experience missing.

Mjolnir Core attempts to fill that gap by recreating classic multiplayer content through community development.

The fact that the mod already includes 19 maps and supports 16 players makes it more substantial than a basic experimental project.

Its alpha status still means bugs, missing features and compatibility problems should be expected.

Public Matchmaking Remains a Missing Feature

One of the biggest limitations at the moment is the lack of a public game browser.

Players can organize games with friends, but there is not yet a straightforward way to browse open multiplayer sessions.

That could restrict the mod’s audience until matchmaking or a server browser is added.

Community projects also generally reach a smaller audience than official game updates because they require additional installation steps and rely on players actively seeking them out.

Even so, the amount of documentation already available suggests the developers want other community members to contribute to the project.

Mjolnir Core Gives Halo Fans an Alternative

Mjolnir Core shows how quickly Halo modders are filling gaps in Campaign Evolved.

With 19 classic maps, 16 player support and a functioning multiplayer setup already available in alpha, the project offers an unofficial way to experience traditional Halo multiplayer inside the newer game.

Official Firefight and Theater support may arrive later, but Mjolnir Core is already giving players access to something Campaign Evolved currently lacks: classic competitive Halo multiplayer.
